I've never worked with chips that are 4mmx4mm with 24 pins on them. Seems it would probably be easier to use air to solder those than a pen.

I don't want to thread-jack too badly (although I do it a lot), but...

Air is really handy for hidden pins, like BGA or the packages where the pads are under the chip body. It's also handy for removing SMT parts.

"Flood and suck" is the method you'd most commonly use with a chip that dense, and you use the pen for it. You flood an entire side with solder, then using either braid or a sucker, you heat it up and suck all the solder off you just put down. The theory is that you'll get all the solder bridging the pins, but surface tension will hold the solder that flowed UNDER the pins and onto the pads. The pads do, of course, need rosin. A microscope is also crucial for examining the work afterwords and making sure you didn't leave any bridges. If you did, you don't try to fix them individually, you just flood-and-suck again.

I do all my work under a usb camera microscope to a 37" HD monitor. It's kinda like remote surgery though. You have to get the brain to accept that image and your fine motor skills to do what you want instead of what your brain demands. It's very high stress and I can't go more than a couple hours before needing at least an hour off for something that dense.

If you're going to use air, you also need solder paste instead of wire solder.

So for you more technically minded peeps, I can't just pull the green led out of my blue xl and swap it for the blue one out of another batt?

Unfortunately, no. It's a surface mount (smt) device. In other words, it just lays on a little circuit board and the solder not only makes the connections, but also holds it in place.

If they were the same, you could pop the whole board out and splice the battery wires - but that wouldn't make a lot of sense since you'd just be killing another battery... :)

To put it into perspective, the LED itself is around 0.024" × 0.012" x .0098" tall (standard 0603 package dimension converted to inches) - that's not something you just run around picking up anyway. Extremely sharp tweezers and a magnifier, or my preferred method, an incredibly teeny vacuum pen and a digital microscope.

Actually, coloring the LED itself should work pretty well. Some Blackberry users do that so the trackball will light up in color.

Take a pair of pliers (smaller is better) and grip the "ash cap" gently. Twist & pull and it will come off.

That little rectangular thing thing with silver ends in the middle of the little round circuit board is the LED. You can make it light just to be sure.

After you color it with a sharpie, just push the "ash cap" back on with your fingers.

OH ok thanks PawPaw and Adrenalynn, I didn't really think a techno-idiot like me was about to pull that one off but it was a thought.

Now, i wonder how well a purple sharpie would cover a green LED? lol and for that matter are we talking about the LED itself or the "ashcap"? with the marker idea

being how i grew up in the 70's im feeling purple on green would look way cool, but then thats just me:confused:lol

ot//im callin it a nite, moon is waning, and its a good time 4 me, to ward off negative energies lol, etc,

ya'll sleep tight, nity nite
