This is just an example for a laugh. This gif image is supposed to be animated and that's how it appears for some people but for me it doesn't move :(

In fact, no animated gif files move on my computer no matter which program I use to open them. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash but the problem is still there.

Does anyone have any idea of what the problem could be?

Thanks.

There is a browser setting to enable animations. For Internet Explorer it can be found at Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Multimedia > check Play Animations in Web Pages. You'll need to re-start your browser for it to take affect.

Another possibility is a security firewall program is blocking it. There should be an options menu in the software that allows you to enable this feature.

Thanks for the welcomes and help, it's great to be enjoying your company again :)

Those bloomin' ears will not wiggle for me though

It's not a browser problem because it happens with Firefox and IE. It happens from a file saved on my desktop so it's not the firewall settings. It also happens with Irfanview, Windows Viewer, Paint and in Star Office.

It's very annoying, I want to see those ears wiggling ;)

You lost me. What happens? Are you saying that you have animation on other files just not this particular gif (or any other .gif file)?

This happens ... "... no animated gif files move on my computer no matter which program I use to open them."

Sorry about the grammar, it's not too clear. What I should have said is that no matter which program I use or where the gif is stored (on my computer or the intertubez) animations do not work at all ... nada ... zip ... nothing but still life :(

No animations at all!? That really is a toughie and one I have not had before and I fix home computers for a living!! Try uninstalling Java and Flash then downloading a program called CCleaner from CCleaner - Home (its free and useful) which cleans out all the rubbish left behind, reinstall your JAVA and flash and hope for the best! If not try Microsoft's Silverlight which is a free download, install the latest Windows updates and try a few other browsers such as Firefox or Opera :)

I'm not sure Kate, not so very computer-savvy - but could it be that you either need to install Java, or have it but have don't have it working (it's a choice in browsers I think)?

As for ear-wiggling, for those that want to be able to do it: it's not that difficult, all you have to do is take some time to find out which face-muscle does what... you'll get to the right muscles eventualy. :D

Other animations seem to work ok, I haven't noticed any problems and the page for checking java animated properly.

I can't work out why it's not working

Hmm, that is baffling. We've verified that animations are enabled via firefox and internet explorer browser option settings, and that a firewall setting isn't blocking those animation settings. We've also covered that the Java and Flash plug-ins are up-to-date and working.

The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that maybe another plug-in is needed since there are several versions of the .gif file formats. Sometimes QuickTime is required (but typically not for gif files). You could give that a shot if you don't have QuickTime installed already. If that doesn't do the trick, then I'll have to join you in your exasperation because we've probably overlooked a setting somewhere.
