Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I've tried everything and have made the situation worse with my fiddling around, now the computer doesn't boot properly.

I'm going to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows

If the bloomin' gifs don't animate after that I'll cry

... I may be gone for some time ;)
Wow, that's a drastic step to take. You will have to download all the upgrades and loose everything you have on there unless you back it up first. Good luck with that.

half an hour to an hour if you don't need to go driver hunting :) Of course theres restoring the backups, reinstalling the programs, setting up the network, setting up the HARD DIP setting up the SOFT DIP setting the time and date counting the coins, checking the ledger thing or whatever they call it these days, cleaning/replacing the JAMMA harness and polishing that CRT for a really good shine!! Cleaning the controls, emptying the ashtrays, replacing the ROM cartridge or other media and checking the fiberglass hasn't gone all funny!

Open IE, on the menu goto Tools then Internet Options, Click the Advanced tab and make sure play animations in web pages is checked. But if that's not it, i suspect video drivers also like others have suggested.

Animations are enabled in Firefox, IE and Irfanview and none of them show movement. The video driver has been reinstalled and is the latest version.

I've managed to get animated smilies back on the forum somehow.

I've sent a message for help to Microsoft and they have given me some things to try to sort it out. So far nothing has worked.

Thanks for the help here, I appreciate your ideas. If I find out what the problem is I'll let you all know.

Do you have any Firewall software installed? (Zonealarm, Norton internet security or the like?) Some have an option under Privacy to block animations. If you do have a firewall try to look and disable that option first.

If you don't have any firewall software installed

try this

Go to start/run and type:

cmd

then click OK

then type at the prompt

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

then wait for the succeded message and click OK

then type at the prompt

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

then wait for the succeded message and click OK

close the command box, reboot and see if things are fixed.
