Does vaping cause phlegm?

It depends on the juice. I've noticed that with 60/40 pg/vg I would get this constant phlegm that stuck to the back of my throat. No amount of coughing would work to clear it out. The moment I thought I'd clear it it'd be back. This actually interrupted my sleep or in some cases prevented me from sleeping. It's real hit or miss. I'm using 100% vg now and although the phlegm is still there, its surprising not that bad. What a journey this has been

Vaping since August 13. Never had any phlegm apart from the ones I coughed up due to cigarette withdrawal.
I know this type of phlegm all too well cause I was an on and off smoker for 10 years. Quit several times for up to a year or so, after smoking about half a pack to a pack of cigs a day.

I do get some mucus buildup in the back of my throat and nostrils from vaping, though. 100% sure it's caused by vaping because I gets worse as I vape more and goes away when I stop. Vanilla flavoured 70/30 juice is what I usually vape on through either an eRoll or eCab. It's about 1 to 3 mil a day and about a mil more on weekends.

Think it's safe to say that vaping, just like *everything else in life*, will have bad long term effects on your entire respiratory system if you do too much of it.

One thing I would really like to see here is for people to not just talk about symptoms but also state clearly what type of liquids are being consumed in which quantities and what kind of device is being used.
This I believe is really important because I would definitely say that blowing 10ml high nic 70/30 juice citrus flavored through a dual coil subohm steam machine everyday can and will have vastly different effects on your system than say, vaping a mil of mildly flavored 50/50 or pure VG a day through a standard 2.2 ohm tank atomizer.

went to vaping sept 2 2012 and only recently started with the phlegm. if i take a very deep breath i can hear the mucus in my lungs. but after over a year this literally just started happening within the last 2 months or so. my first guess was the citrus flavors. i hear those can cause some lung issues. i did up my VG on one juice (30p/70v) but most of mine are 50/50 or 65/35. im going to cut out the citrus and see if that helps. otherwise, this is a long ... winter cold.

I have been vaping only for 3.5 years and only got phlegm for the first few months useing 60pg/40vg. Of course I never had 1 real cigarette once I started vaping.
I dripped then with a 1.5 ohm atty.
I notice my brother vapes Fireball/cinnamon ejuice and he coughs when he is useing it,if he switches to the ejuice I use (RY4 from Azure) he doesn't cough at all.

Just a thought but I was recently diagnosed with silent reflux - I've been vaping for 2 years, no cigs. Anyway, the dr told me that nicotine greatly effects silent reflux symptoms, which includes phlegm in throat, raspy lungs, throat burning sensation, lump in throat sensation, feeling of hollowness in the chest cavity area. Silent reflux is different than regular GERD/reflux as you don't really feel any heartburn. She also said that silent reflux is misdiagnosed or missed completely most of the time - and can cause significant damage to the esophagus/larynx, etc. if left untreated for a long time.

So I just thought I'd throw that in.

I didn't begin coughing up yellow phlegm until after I started vaping approximately three months after quitting cigarettes..... I saw my doctor today because of the thick yellow phlegm I have been coughing up daily... Now she wants me to have a CT scan for...lung cancer. Symptoms usually manifest AFTER quitting cigarettes...

I smoked for 40 years....
Be smart... be aware.

Try not to worry too much. Thick yellow phlegm is often a sign of bronchitis. But, please keep us posted!!

I think it's safe to say that vaping causes phlegm and silent reflux at this point. What is not known is if this reaction is harmful over time. I do HIIT (high intesity interval training) 3 times a week and I'm feeling nothing but great still after doing it. I think the phelgm is an allergic reaction but still can't be sure. I really don't know what else could cause the pure white phelgm.

Silent reflux can also cause the white phlegm but usually reflux phlegm is more clear in texture and you get a lot more of it as your body just goes haywire in protecting itself (well, depending ont he level of reflux you have).

It sucks and I go through the alka-seltzer chew tabs like they're candy - lowering the nic level doesn't help me either. Starting to think I just need to stop altogether especially after a night of drinking and vaping.

I will say this, if you begin having symptoms of dysphagia (trouble swallowing) and you're constantly choking on mucus.....back off for a while, don't get scared (dysphagia can be very scary) just chill out for a bit with the vaping and your diet and it should subside......acid reflux cab be diabolical at times.

Yeah, I'm done. Tired of clearing my throat, snorting back thick mucus, losing my voice, dry-coughing... I use my voice primarily for work, and I sound like an old man aspirating. I'm like a walking bucket of phlegm bubbling and globbing around in my throatular cavities. If I keep it up any longer, there will undoubtedly be long-term issues. It's foolish to think otherwise.

I vaped for nearly 4 years. Hey, it got me off of analogs, so that's a big plus!

Dang, that sound terrible. I don't experience anything like that and I don't know anyone that experiences that. But yeah, if that's what's going on with you, I think stopping is a good idea.

Yeah, I didn't want to sugar coat my experience, cause I know how blind and defensive people can sometimes get on this forum. But yeah, this is happening. Durr, I've been inhaling liquid into my lungs all day long for 4 years. What do you expect?

Yep, you sound EXACTLY like me and I think the reason we just kept continuing is because it subsides after a bit. When you think of it, it really does affect your quality of life too. I really hoping all these years of it was just an allergic reaction to. To those who don't have this issue, just be thankful you don't.

I don't think it's really a "what do you expect?" situation if not everyone is having that problem...

I completely agree. Your experience is uncommon as far as I can tell. That doesn't make it untrue and I feel bad that you are having issues. However, just because you are having issues doesn't mean that it is to be expected. I have vaped for over three years now and have zero side effects (other than spending way too much money). I would wager that you are somewhat allergic to one of the ingredients in your ejuice.
