Does your kanthal have a taste to it?

Peaches and Creme yarn must be boiled to remove sizing. I cut off about 3ft and boil for about 20 min making sure the water level doesn't drop too much. Then let it air dry. One dry I cut one end diagonally to make a sharp point. Then I take a drop of Elmer's glue and rub it into the pointy end and let it dry so I end up with a needle like point, making sure it is perfectly round. Then to use it I push the needle point through the coil and pull the yarn all the way through and cut off what I need from the opposite end. Makes rewicking qwick and easy.

Heres a pic of my build, this is after maybe 1 second of being on, coil not red yet and vapor is thin. After 2-3 seconds it begins to glow in the middle and spread to the outside and creates decent vapor

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you saying that your coil glows red while juiced up after 2-3 seconds?

If so that's a major red flag something is going on, because coils should never glow when juiced. Shorts can sometimes produce some pretty obscene metallic like flavors even without using SS mesh as a wick (mesh just makes a short more likely, and then you burn SS in addition to the kanthal)

I use the white "Peaches and Cream" cotton yarn from Walmart to wick Protank heads. $1.47 for a lifetime supply. The full strand is a snug fit on a 1/16" coil, but pulls through easy enough once started, and it seems to wick well with 60/40 or 50/50 blends. Just let it soak for a few minutes and do a few dry pulls before vaping on it.

Mine is Sugar and Cream from Hobby Lobby. One piece is 4 strands twisted. I can only get 2 individual strands through a 1/16. A full piece fits well in a 5/64. How many strands does the Peaches and Cream have?

About a week ago I bought some bamboo. I didn't realize how thin it was until I saw it. I boiled that for about 20 minutes, tried it out, was ok. Kinda earthy tasting. I'll have to try it again with an additional boil. It's a good size for a tiny coil, but I doubled and twisted to wick it through.

Man, that reminds me. I DO have about 360 feet of that same yarn, and I've been so happy with plain old cotton balls that I forgot to try it out. Maybe I'll do that tonight!

Let us know what you think Jake. I've been pretty happy with both, since I finally got it right. Love/hate thing going with cotton for a while.

I didnt hold the button down long enough to see if it did glow red when wicked. I didnt want to burn the wick. But it was taking a good 2-3 seconds to even start turning red when i was test firing

Are you using this?

Yep, that's what I have, too. I sat and built a bunch of coils last weekend using a 1/16 and a 5/64 , different gauges of kanthal and different wicking, doing experiments and writing it all down. I was only curious how many strands the other kind was.

But yes, it does fit a 5/64 perfectly :)

Peaches and cream is 4 strands. I wet my fingertips and twist the end to a point then thread it through my coil, which is 1/16th.

And no, I don't boil my cotton.

Sent from my recliner with a spatula

In my experience unboiled it doesn't wick as well as tastes funky for a bit. I think this is probably due to the sizing.

I've noticed after a dry burn, the vape tastes horrible for the first 30 minutes or so. After that, it's right back to delicious. I'm using an RSST with mesh, just for clarification.

That is one of the reasons I like rebuilding BCC heads. After a dry burn, I drop the head down into an old pill bottle with a little bit of vodka and swish it around a bit. That seems to get rid of that taste you are talking about.

I flame the Kanthal before I wrap it AND THEN I wipe it off with a damp cloth. Vodka would probably be better, as it would also get anything oil-soluable. But I'm assuming the flame handled that.

I use cheesecloth wicking but I'm not liking that in an RBA, it's too bulky. Love it in Vivi Novas though.

Remember, resistance wire is made for making electric burners, furnace elements, electric iron elements, all kinds of industrial things you don't put in your mouth, so cleaning before using is only prudent. And removes bad tastes.

I haven't noticed an issue in regards to taste or wicking. But to be fair, my wife and I don't vape thick liquids in our protanks, 50/50 being the thickest blend.

I do find that it's best if they soak for a couple minutes before that first vape.
