I use 5 wraps of 32 gauge on a doubled 2mm silica wick to create a coil that runs a little over 2 ohms. I usually cut a length that my meter says is 1.5 ohms and by the time I wrap and cut off the ends after install the plugs, it usually reads about 2.0 to 2.2. Repetition will get you where you want to be. It's mostly trial and error (or success).

Someone (I think it was TomCatt) measured a stock coil from something and found 34 ga wire. But depending on make/model/day-of-week and possibly your astrological sign, the gauge used could vary between runs.

Basically, the lower the ga, the thicker the wire, the longer the coil needs to be for a given ohms, and the more the heat gets spread as well as more watts needed to heat it to glowing.

That's why the SLR people are using mechs, heating coat-hanger sized Kanthal and require 30 watts. (I exaggerate, but not by much).

Turn it up or lower the ohms slightly or use thinner wire.
