I just got the $20 el cheapo kayfun lite plus clone and I must say, Im incredibly impressed with what I got for the money. I also ordered some 28,30, and 32ga kanthal and I have organic cotton. Im becoming obsessed with trying to build the perfect coil and as usual, im having some successes and failures.

I have rebuilt my protank coils for a long time and find that twisted 32ga or 30ga kanthal works best. However, now I have a larger deck to build on and I have been trying the 28ga with very little success. ( Im using the same principles in coil wrapping as usual ie, pinch tight and torch, glow orange on device and pinch until uniform.) Im using cotton with the other gauges so my wicking is not an issue. Yet still, I cant make any 28ga coils that work well.

Being that my vamov3 will only fire above 1.2ohm, could this be the problem? I see people with mechanicals who only use 28ga and blow great clouds of tasty vapor. I can get nice hits, but they taste like crap and my 30ga builds completely blow them away in all areas.

Ive tried
30ga 1/6 from 7-10 wraps (pleased)
5/64 from 6-8 wraps (also pleased)
3/32 at 7 wraps (ok)
28ga 1/16 9-11 wraps (not impressed)
5/64 8-10 wraps (also not impressed, but a little better)
3/32 7-10 wraps (same old not impressed)

So basically im getting better performance, flavor and vapor from my 30ga and poo poo from my 28. It seems to take way too long to get up to speed and never produces the thick, flavorful vapor that I like. Why is this? So many people love this stuff and im not really seeing the greatness for myself. Does 28 need to be wrapped to a lower ohm than my vamo will fire, to get awesome results?

the thicker wire doesnt play well with "standard" vv/vw units... stick to 30 ga. 1.5 - 2.0 ohms with he kayfuns.. kayfuns are flavor makers, not fog machines.
If you are looking for clouds, you will need more amps/watts and lower ohms ( .8- .5)

I keep it between 10 and 12 watts. Ill try the 11 wrap coil again and see what I get. My favorite is 10 wraps of 30ga at 2ohm with cotton.
I realize that everyone has different likes and dislikes, but 28ga seems to be the unanimous favorite among most experienced vapers, it seems odd that it has never worked for me.

can you also try two lengths of 30 gauge twisted together?
supposed to get more surface area, and maybe heat up faster

Thats something to think about. I primarily use twisted 32ga for my protank rebuilds. Twisted 30 would need to be a big coil to get the ohms I need, but Ill see how it works out.

well heck I only said 30 gauge cause i thought it was the thinnest wire you have, but if you get a better result with your protanks how about you make the same coil for starters that you would make for the protank; start there, then add a second one.

You will not get 12 watts if you are using 18650 the vamo will not go over 11 watts without stacking a set of 18350 batteries that might be your problem with using the 28 gauge kanthal.

I didn't care for 28g builds on a regulated device also, any resistance above 1 ohm didn't perform well. I now love 28g for builds at about .7 or .8 ohms on a mech mod. I was very satisfied with builds of 1.5- 1.9 ohms with 30g wire, but after experimenting with 28g at lower resistances,I find the flavor and cloud production are better. Keep on trying new setups, you never know what you can discover.
