As a B&M employee of over a year (and chronicled here on ECF), I will say I sometimes cringe when I sell a mod for a large markup. Mind you I do not work on commission and my only goal is to help the customer sort through his options, find what is best for him, and use it safely.
I have no idea if the clerk in OP's post lied or not. I know I have no motivation to lie about what my store carries. I'm not the owner and again, my paycheck is no different whether the customer buys an Evod or a sigelei.
Many of my store's customers know prices are cheaper online. I don't know how much of a mystery that actually is or should be. Seems like if someone can have groceries delivered off Amazon to their homes, someone could also buy vaping equipment online. But our customers keep returning for gear, repeatedly. Maybe they don't all care about the markup. I have no compunction telling customers I buy about 50/50 online and in store. It's not a huge secret. Most of my customers are just happy they have a salesperson willing to hold their hands through the initial processes of learning the ropes.
