Here is a thread you might want to read...
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/66848-guide-direct-dripping.html

A cleaned or completely blown out atomizer needs more drops, and so I usually use about 4-5 drops then.
But after that, it is usually around 2-3 drops to be added when the flavor starts to drop off.

Do keep in mind that this varies a bit by drop size.

Drop size can vary based on the following...
--How much juice you atomizer holds
--Viscosity of juice in question
--How hard you squeeze
--Size of dropper

Here is a poll that has a lot of good additional information...

that's the best advice you'll ever get! I find that VG is more tolerant to over dripping than PG but once you dial it in, it's the way to go. I only use carts for driving. Please don't drip and drive.

I tried a cart for 5 mins it started to melt I drip it has its drawbacks like when driving and when you get some down the side of the tip but is less faffy than cartos for me at least.

True that. Dripping while going 70 on highway is tricky especially when its in early morning. I just keep paper towels close by me in case I miss. lol

I got tired of messing with carts and tried dripping on a whim. I didn't have a drip tip so I just used an empty cart and instantly fell in love with it. I drip the majority of the time now, and use cartos for when I'm out and about.
Besides the flavor and vapor benefits, I like the way dripping sort of gives you a "cigarette break" type of experience.

It is like taking out your pack and lighting up, and you know your break is over when you need to drip again.
Or if you like longer breaks, when you need to drip the third time.

So it has that definite start and end to it that was an important part of smoking cigarettes for a lot of people.

Yeah, if only I had enough discipline to leave my bottle of juice in my office instead of taking it with me!

So the EGO unit is a "drip" unit by design? I am new to this and was interested in picking up a joye ego, but dont want to keeping filling it up every few vapes.

No. Essentially, the eGo is a bigger version of the Joye 510. They use the same atomizers but the eGo batteries are just bigger and last longer. You can still use it like any other pv where you use carts and cartos. The option to drip can be applied to almost any pv. The advantage of the eGo, especially when using an eGo mega atty with a cart or using a cartomizer, is the capacity to hold more liquid. So, if you don't wanna keep filling it, an eGo would be a good starting point.

And then there are those who insist on the "shotgun method", which is dripping 2 to 3 drops in the atomizer and vaping using the open end of the barrel of the atomizer! That way you don't need a drip tip and it's already open for the next drip when the vape gives out. This works best with a long barrel atomizer like the Mega Cylinder atty (the short ones get hot!).

I still use the Mega Cylinder carts. 45-50 drops and I'm good for a while without refilling.

Drip a few drops of eliquid onto the atomizer through the top of the drip tip, then vape. 3-5 puffs later drip again. Vape. Repeat.

I just wanted to point out for the benefit of those who haven't tried dripping that the 3-5 puffs quoted above is a very conservative estimate. How many puffs you get depends on a lot of factors, including the voltage of your device, the resistance and condition of the atomizer, the type of battery used, the composition of the juice, and the size of each puff. I use a very aggressive setup (3.7v, IMR battery, debridged/dewicked Cisco LR 306, and PG heavy juice) and I easily get 5 puffs from each drip on an atomizer that is broken in. Someone using a 3.2v device (eGo, 510, etc) and standard resistance attys (~2.5 ohms) will get more puffs per drip.

It's not necessarily as inconvenient as it may seem from the quote. With a juice fed device, it's not inconvenient at all. I only need to refill my 6ml bottle once every day or two.

When using a 801 atty on a V3.1 with a drip tip, do I need to change attys when changing to a different juice?

No. You can "chase" flavors in the same atty. You will get some crossing of flavors, but the older flavor will eventually go away with most juices. Some have such a strong flavor, they will contaminate an atty until it's thoroughly cleaned. That's no different than using multiple carts on the same atty though.
