So, today I've been experimenting with coils that seemed to have had their day. You know, the nasty burnt taste of a coil ready for the bin/trash. Following the advice on this forum, and Youtube, I removed the rubber grommet, tube and loose wicks and proceeded to 'dry burn' until the coil looked a bit cleaner.

And I can report, it worked a treat. An otherwise shot coil is vaping good and clean….like a new coil. Not that buying knew coils is that expensive, especially when compared to the cost of cigs, but discovering I can resurrect a used coil and use again is another snippet on this voyage of discovery.

This hobby gets better by the day.

Yup; I know the feeling; been there;

Yesterday I came across my first coil where the silica wick inside the coil has deteriorated to the point of... well, almost dead; it'll put that one in a special can till I get wire and wick to try rebuilding.

Is there a rule of thumb for about how many times you can get by with cleaning and dry burning? Is it one time and then you'd need to rebuild?

The thing that wrecks mine is if the top wicks get gunked together with the silica wick running through the coil and in pulling out the top wick, the center wick also gets pulled and mangled

I see you are in the UK, where abouts? I'm down in East Anglia, Suffolk.

If you need help, and are local (in the East Anglia area), you could send me a PM :D

I'm in the sunny midlands (did I say sunny? what I meant was drenched), so not too local I'm afraid Borescoped. Thanks very much for the offer though.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.

Being a toddler in vaping terms, I'm still in the early days of learning my way and every time I come on this forum I learn something new and helpful. Dry burning has really been my first foray into doing anything other than plonking a new head in and vaping away.

I figure the next easiest thing for a learner driver like me is to have a bash using cotton as a flavour wick, and thereafter cotton as a wick thats contained by the coil. Being quite dextrous with my hands (even if I don't say so myself), I reckon this won't be too hard. After which a roll of kanthal will be featuring in 'my basket' next time I go on for supplies. Just need to gen up on the methodology for re-building in the meantime.

If you go on youtube, Todd Ecigreviews did a little video on a kit that is being sold that uses micro coils and cotton. He speaks very highly of that kit, the vapor production, throat hit and flavor are supposed to be excellent. It's something to check out. There are many videos out there also regarding how to coil/wick evod/PT heads to help give you many different people doing basically the same thing, but with slightly different twists on it. It isn't too hard, just need to build up the materials and the courage to jump in with both feet first! Good luck!

Could I be so bold as to ask, what's the difference between a 'micro-coil' and a 'coil'. I've just indulged in a little e-window shopping and note there are several different gauges of wire, each with a different resistance per m. Are the thinner gauges used for micro-coils, and the thicker one's for coils?

Commonly accepted on the forum , a micro coil is rolled on a 1/16" (1.5 mm) diameter cylinder or smaller and all the coils touch each other.

Here are 3 mature threads that helped me greatly in gaining a better understanding of rebuilding:

Close compact coil, like a solenoid

misnomer

probably got the name from using the same thicker wire gauge as on a rebuildable, but squeezeing together to fit in the tight space on commercial atomizer heads.

My nearest B&M charges $2.50 a piece, but usavapeshop.com has the protank/evod coils for $4.50 and MT3/TS3 coils for $4.75 for 5 packs. I'm looking forward to trying rebuilding when i get my protank 2 in the mail. Same site has those for $13.99, minis for $11.99.

Wonderful! I've been looking for a cheaper 5 pack of T3S Coils.

See chart: View attachment Microcoils and Resistance Chart.pdf. Micro coils are between 0.055" - 0.065". Bigger is Mini, standard, etc. Smaller is nano, super nano, etc.

You can replace that wick with cotton as well although feeding it through the coil takes some finesse. Just make sure you don't burn it dry :)

Yes, finesse, along with eyesight, I no longer have at my age.
But maybe I'll fix that in a couple months with one of these:

Oh my gosh! You mean you didn't RINSE after dry burning?! It's the law man! But if you don't get any burnt or funky taste, I suppose it's okay.:p

rinse? I usually have mine soaking for days before I get around to dry burning a batch; i dryburn and blow them out then add wicks; i dont rinse them after dryburn.... so far.... should i?
