I'm currently sipping away on Olbas Oil (not homemade - about £3 for 10ml in Boots) - it's probably not very good for me or my atomizer but it's got one heck of a menthol kick :p

@ eyespy:

I would stop using olbas oil immediately if I were you - it lists wintergreen oil or Methyl salicylate as one of its ingredients which is extremely toxic:

'Ingestion can cause severe poisoning and death, Lethal doses with children at 10 ml, adults at 30 ml.'
Guenther, volume II, page 640 written around 1949
*** Birch/Wintergreen Essential Oil Toxicity ***

You probably aren't ingesting too much (at least not enough to do any serious damage! 3.70% per 28ml bottle), but I would stop vaping olbas oil if I were you and perhaps try menthol crystals if you want an alternative...

Thanks for the headsup smokindeuce - it's good to see forum members looking out for each other :)

I've stopped vaping Olbas for the time being as the after taste is not too pleasant and it's not easy to rid the atomizer of the flavour once you've finished.

I did check out the ingredients before hand but nothing really struck me as particularly dangerous in the doses I'd be inhaling - apparently the lowest published lethal dose for Wintergreen is 101 mg/kg body weight in adult humans.

I'm not a great menthol fan but get a pang for it now and again - next time rather than vape it neat I'll try one drop of Olbas to 5 of VG - the sweetness of the VG may overcome the unpleasant after taste of the Olbas.

I might suggest that remaining below LD50 rates etc. is not necessarily the best guide to safety. There is dead, and then there is seriously ill. I would still want to avoid seriously ill.

No worries eyespy - the reason why it rang alarm bells is because I tried adding a drop of olbas oil a few months back.... also got the same nasty taste and decided to do some research on it as I also didn't feel great afterwards. On discovering the toxicity of wintergreen oil, alarm bells definitely rang and I didn't feel like it (even one drop) had done me a lot of good.

I would definitely agree with Bertrand and add to it that we are already vaping some unknown quantities (pg etc) and nicotine itself which is toxic - I would steer well clear of any other ingredients that are known toxins.

Afterall wintergreen by itself in tiny diluted quantities may not be an issue, but add to that nicotine, pg etc and its starts to accumulate in the body and could cause liver/kidney problems. Even if it just makes you slightly unwell, its best to be avoided!
