Dual coil question

I recently purchased a KangerTech Protank 3 (which is a brilliant and gorgeous design, I love it). Since I'm still fairly new to how the different cartomizers all feel and smoke, I'm looking for some clarification on the duel coil design. Since there are twice the number of coils, the unit technically burns hotter than other single coil units, correct? How does this affect (or how is it affected by) the voltage output of my battery? If I use a variable voltage battery (Ego-T 2), should I use the lower setting or the higher? My brain tells me to use the higher setting to vape all the liquid in both coils and keep it from flooding. But the words "duel coil burns hotter" brings me to the conclusion that using a higher voltage brings me that much closer to burning it. :evil:

A dual coil needs a higher voltage, as the wattage (heat) is divided over two coils. The bad news is this required twice the amperage, and an eGo battery is a bit small for the full effect. That said, I have never seen that big a gain in heat or vapor with a dual coil, even when I use them om my large 18650 VV mods....:vapor:

You got it Stosh, it will draw more current. No need to increase the voltage also unless you want each coil to see more watts than in the single coil carto.

ETA: On second thought, I think I see what you mean. You should be setting volts at what you would for a single coil of the same resistance. So if it's a 3 ohm single coil you'll be around 5 volts for about 8 watts. There is no way a eGo-T battery is going to run a 1.5 ohm dual coil at 5 volts. I think it probably has a 2.5 amp limit which means it's going to max out at around 3.75V.

A dual coil burns half as hot as a single coil. Think of it this way. You have a water line going to a faucet and you turn the faucet on full blast. You'll be getting the full power from that water line out of the one spicket. But if you were to put a y at the end of the water line and then two faucets then you would be cutting the output in half. You'll still get the same water pressure going to the y then it splits in half and you get half the pressure from each faucet. Does that make sense? So essentially with a dual coil you're only getting half of the output to each coil. They burn half as hot but since there are two they produce just as much if not more vapor. And with dual coils you are running each coil at a higher ohms and dividing it in half. So two 4 ohm coils together will run 2 ohms total.
My advice is this. Put your topper on your device, turn the device power down to like 3.5 volts then take a puff. If it's too weak turn it up a little. Then when you find where you like it, leave it.

You really should adjust to taste imho. Just because you're head is a certain resistance that isn't the only factor here. You have to account for the type of juice your vaping, how you vape, the airflow your getting through your protank 3 as well. You can spend all day chasing numbers and trying to find a definitive answer as to what voltage to set it at but you will be better off just adjusting it to your taste.
