well in terms of diameter, most if not all of your basic cartomizers are the same size and will fit through the same tank cap holes.
In terms of length, there's generally two sizes. The tanks labelled "DCT" are for dual coil or XL sized cartomizers. The standard sized cartomizers aren't long enough, unless you're okay with sticking the drip tip directly into the tank cap.

Hello. That is an extremely dumb question. Why did you even post it? You have been an ECF member since February, you should have subliminally picked up everything you need to know about vaping already! Please don't tell me you can't rebuild an RBA in your sleep yet or make a box mod - what have you been doing? Wearing a tin foil hat????
The one thing you should know is that there are no "dumb" questions. How do you think any of us learned this stuff? I use carto tanks almost exclusively. What size battery will you be using it on? Do you vape "tank cracking" juices and what is your budget?

You may also use boge single coil f16 cartos in the dct tanks or the boge f16 tank. They come in a 5 pack from vaporbeast.com for 8.99 and free shipping always
As Orobus said, tanks come in either two lengths: standard and XL. The above pic shows both, from IBTanked.com.
Basically you either choose which length cartomizer you currently use and then pick the appropriate length tank, or...
choose the tank length you prefer and get the appropriate length cartomizers that will work with it.
Of course, all carto tanks require that the cartomizers to have holes in them in order for the juice in the tank be able to get into the cartomizer. There are pre-punched cartomizers available from most vendors. Or, one can buy regular carts (the silver stainless steel version, not the black or white ones) and make the holes themselves with a carto punch tool. I'd recommend getting the laser-drilled carts initially.

Standard sized cartomizers are typically ~35mm in length. XL and Dual Coils are typically ~45mm. They measure them minus the threads incidentally, these measurements are describing the "barrel." This is important, because some vendors use obscure abbreviations you don't understand and you have to look at the measurements. I still don't understand what the name of ikenvape's cartomizers means. :shrug:
here's something higher resolution to show you. generally, if you're looking at a regular tank without a built-in mouthpiece, an XL will fit most of them, even if you have some tube hanging out the end. This is two standard sizes next to an XL. notice that the XL has a hole already in it, and a flange. this is to keep it from sliding off of your tank.

This is my green froggie tank next to a cheap j-tank. The froggie is of a standard cartomizer size, the j-tank is for XL size. A lot of people don't like the rubber stoppers, but you can use almost any cartomizer in it.
Your best bet to start off is to get some XL sized prepunched, flanged cartomizers. Eventually you could punch them yourself, but you'd probably need a skirt like I have here to keep the tank from sliding down over the threads and flooding your battery.

The smoktech dual coils have a perpetual problem FOR ME in that the post needs to be pulled constantly. Since you're new, I don't want to subject you to that. I like the ikenvape cartos, but they're perpetually out of stock so you need to get put on the notify list and order as soon as you get an email that they're back in stock.

Can you use a tank tool (Slap You Know) with the froggy tank? Is it High Desert?
Yeah. I suggest getting a cheaper tank before delving into pyrex and Phiniacs.

I have looked at tanks from IBTanked, Phiniac, and Valley View vapes. I've handled the Valley View tanks, and decided they weren't for me. Phiniac would be an awesome gift but I can't convince myself I want something that pricey. It would simply be a vanity object. IBTanked looks good, but for some reason I have difficulty gleaning info from their website. But that's clearly user error, and not the website's fault.
EDIT: Good luck! I hope carto tanks work for you. They were a godsend for me. Just remember to prime the carto properly first before inserting it into the tank and then filling the tank. Baditude has an excellent blog article on how to prime and fill a carto tank. There are wonderful links on youtube as well.

Yeah, it's a HDV tank I won in a contest, and I cherish it.
Sure you could, would be easier on the rubber stoppers but it's not a strict necessity
Thanks. I was curious because I have a tank that has grommets instead of caps and they are too tight to use a tank tool.
Thanks everyone! So basically the carto sizes are the LENGTH & all ODs are the same. That makes it TONS simpler & the pics and links are a great help!
My 1300mah Vision Spinner is slightly larger than an ego type battery.
I'm only vaping tobacco flavors right now, but I'm starting to venture into new territory...and I'm willing to spend a few bucks to get me into a nice set-up.

Yes, arrowsmit. that seems like a nice mid price range tank to start with and it should be impervious to the tank cracking juices.

Ego Adapter for tanks
covers the ego threads on your spinner, looks nicer, gives it some stability. makes it so your tank can't slide off your carto and down onto the threads (and flood your battery) and makes it less likely that the end of the tank will catch on something and pull off the other way, either.

I have 3 IBtanks and love them. I plan on getting more. The reason I asked about the battery size was to suggest what would look nice on them, and the liquid to make sure you get didn't something incompatible. Here is an IBTanked on a Twist (with a thread cover):

I would like to clarify something that Orobus mentioned. He said that the flange that are present on some cartomizers (ie Smoktech) were to keep them from sliding off the tank. Actually, they only keep the tank from sliding toward the battery, not away or off the battery. Once getting a cartotank, make it a practice to pick up your tank/battery combo by the battery only. Although the vast majority of tanks fit snuggly on the cartomizer, don't push your luck by picking it up by the tank only.
The Ikenvape brand carto's are known a standard for the 35mm length, and "Mega" for the XL length, FYI. Additionally, althought DCT stands for dual coil tanks, single coil cartomizers fit and work in these just as well.
