Thought I would share this interesting bit of lore with my DV friends:

Today, August 10th, is the Feast of Saint Lawrence of Rome.

St. Lawrence was from Spain and lived during the 3rd century (225-258 AD).

He is believed to have sent the chalice used by Jesus at the Last Supper
to Spain from Rome.
St. Peter had brought it to Rome in the 1st century.
It remains today in a special chapel in the Cathedral of Valencia, Spain.

He is better known for his martyrdom for the Christian faith.
A well-known legend has persisted from earliest times.
As a deacon in Rome, Lawrence was responsible for maintaining the Church's material goods and distributing alms to the poor.

One day, the prefect of Rome demanded Lawrence hand over all the Church's treasures.

Lawrence brought forward the poor people of the city, stating humbly,

"Behold in these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you...
...the church’s crown.
"

The prefect was so angry that he had a great gridiron (grill)
with hot coals prepared beneath it.

He and his men placed Lawrence on it to die a slow, painful death.

After suffering for quite some time, Lawrence remarked,
“I'm well done on that side.
You can turn me over!”

(Note the gridiron in the stained glass window photo at top!)

He is the patron saint of cooks and chefs.
