Hello. Has anyone heard of any reports or stories or studies of E-cig use being bad for you? Any side effects or sicknesses, whether short term or long term?? My dad has been using it for about a few months now, and his throat is painful. He is 64 and has been smokeing for almost 50 yrs. He has been fine up until last week. I've just been always paranoid of this new product. Any information would be greatly appreciated, THanks!!

vaping is relatively new and I don't think that there are any long term studies. There are many sides as to if it is good for you and if it is bad for you. I think that the only true test of effects can only be told by the future.

If your dads throat is sore and he has been vaping PG liquid, perhaps he should try VG, I have heard and seen many people that have had negative responses physically to PG liquid.

It is pretty conclusive that e-cigs are significantly less bad for you than regular cigarettes. There are a few minor side effects that some people experience when they start vaping, but they all go away pretty quickly. The biggest complaint is a sore/dry throat, which can often be remedied by simply drinking more water when vaping. Since your father has been vaping for a few months, it is more likely that he has a sore throat from an infection or other illness not related to vaping. If it persists, he might want to try VG-based liquid, which some people find easier on the throat.

I have been a smoker for 50yrs also and I went through a few side affects from VG so I started using a VG/PG mix and it's fine now. He should have a doc look at his throat as it could be something from all those yrs. he smoked. I have no other side affects except an occasional shortness of breath and phlem in my throat if I vape in an excessive manner. I just take a couple cough drops and it clears right up.

My husband had sore throat issues with PG, but none with VG and does not cough with VG.

I have not had any bad issues with any of it, and health overall is MUCH better, O2 stats up, BP down, sugar down, able to take a walk down to the lake without huffing and puffing, doc very pleased.

Hope this info helps.

I'm surprised your BP is down. that is one thing I have been wondering about. I thought it was the nicotine that raises it.

wondered about that too, but I've read that before. Perhaps nicotine raises it, but there may be stuff in smokes that double raises it (or also raises it) I'm just guessing...

Your dad might just have a throat infection totally unrelated to his vaping you know.
Its easy to 'blame' his new habit but you said he'd been 'fine' after vaping for several months which to me was the satellite statement. If he's been fine until now - it might just be a normal throat infection that anyone can get from time to time. Giving up cigs can leave a person more vulnerable to infections for a while afterward; I'd pack him off to the docs and he can have a look, see if its strep.
I wouldn't be paranoid - did you blame any other of his illnesses on smoking? (Maybe you did lol). Vaping isn't going to be WORSE than smoking, even if its not 'significantly better' (for his lungs it will be better, but can't say for anything else).
For the record, I have low BP (low is normal for me btw, despite years of smoking) and it went up a while ago as I have thyroid issues (too much not too little) and since I started vaping its gone down again lol. Also my thyroid meds just got reduced as smoking affects the thyroid too. My doc was pleased I was no longer smoking, and not bothered about me vaping :)

It's the time of the year for strep. I know cause I just got back from my dr and that's what they told me when they told me I have strep. I brought up the e-cig to my dr and also mentioned it to one of the nurses. Both agreed that they're a lot safer than regular cigarettes. One of the office admins useto vape and it helped her quit completely.

I think that the nic raises it right away but it goes down pretty quickly after that. I think there is other stuff in smoke that keeps your BP up over time. I could be wrong but thats what I've heard.

Just guessing, but the carbon monoxide may raise BP as well ... less oxygen in the blood, more blood needs to circulate to achieve the same level of oxygenation.

I was vaping PG only e-liquids and noticed my throat got irritated.

I searched around these forums about VG. Some people referenced Wilson's Glycerine. What ended up doing was going to my local Michaels craft store and buying Wilson's Glycerine (VG). You can find it in the cake decorating isle, and it only costs about $2.25 for 59mL. I used that to cut some VG into my PG liquids (about 5-10% VG). I have noticed my throat is not irritated anymore, and I get more vapor on the exhale.
