My name is Colin and I am a high school senior. I'm 18 years old and I have been vaping for about a year now. Since I first tried it, I love the e-cig.

A requirement of our senior year English class is to contact a person in the field who has expertise in an area of personal, academic, or professional interest, and to conduct an interview with that person using email as part of a larger research requirement. The information gathered in the interview will be added to information gathered through traditional research

My research has led me to this site, and I am contacting you all in hopes that you would be able to answer a few questions using email or this forum. My research topic is the electronic cigarette, and I have questions about the following:

  1. What exactly is the electronic cigarette?
  2. How greatly are the e-cigs gaining popularity?
  3. How is this product affecting the tobacco industry?
  4. What does the FDA say about the e-cig?
  5. Is this product really a ‘safe’ alternative?
  6. What chemicals are you pulling into your lungs with a puff of vapor?
  7. What is the maintenance fee involved in vaping?
  8. Why would a person want to switch from cigarettes to this?
  9. Are there any long-term side effects of an e-cig?
  10. Will it make a difference in their health?
If you are willing and able to answer these questions, I would really appreciate it. I really appreciate your consideration on these questions, and hope you’ll be able to share your expertise with me as I investigate this topic.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Great project....so you need 5 posts....lets chat...
Tell us about your ecigs use...what type of pv and ejuice do you use...
:)

Thanks :) I use the Yeti 510, usually the usb passthru. Sometimes I vape all day, but i also use smokeless tobacco. Vaping is my "dip" substitute. But I enjoy the menthol flavors, english toffee, and RY4. I mean, I like it all, but those are my main flavors :)

this might be too long and a little uncredible...but sorry couldnt resist :p i love these things.

1.What exactly is the electronic cigarette?
An e cigarette is a apparatus that heats up a mixture of some kind of non oil based solvent into a inhalable vapor, combined with nicotine it effectively gives cigarette users a healthier alternative without the thousand + chemicals and tars. usually the mixture is propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, nicotine, flavoring, and sometimes a little distilled water or grain alcohol for thinning.

How greatly are the e-cigs gaining popularity?
For its many benefits over traditional tobacco, the e cig is gaining huge popularity within the united states and is gaining ground in other countries. in countries where traditional tobacco is relatively inexpensive however; it remains to be a luxury that is hard to come by.

How is this product affecting the tobacco industry?
as of the time of writing, the ecig is a fairly young and small competitor over the tobacco industry, however the tobacco industry which faces scrutiny for deadly products have since found an interest in alternative harm reduction forms of enjoying there product. we can expect that as the future goes on many tobacco companies would contribute to the e cig industry either as liquid manufacturers or something else.
What does the FDA say about the e-cig?
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/08/s...but-they-have-some-unlikely-critics.html?_r=1
-it should also be noted that since the original FDA scare during 2009, many major eliquid companies such as dekang and johnson creek have filed safety reports with the FDA in order to assure quality.
Is this product really a ‘safe’ alternative?
given the extremely unhealthy nature of regular tobacco; And the long time proven track record of the ingredients contained within the inhalable liquid contained within an ecig, it stands to reason that many health experts conclude the ecig to be a much safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes.
What chemicals are you pulling into your lungs with a puff of vapor?
aside from nicotine; which in and of itself in the right amounts have proven to be no more harmless than caffeine, the vapor contains a mixture of propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin. Both chemicals have had a 50 year or longer reputation to be fairly non-toxic.
What is the maintenance fee involved in vaping?
Aside from the initial investment of buying an ecig, the maintenance fee would vary greatly depending on many factors. one could spend just as much or more than there cigarette habit if there so inclined to; however one could also save tons of money over regular cigarettes. the factors that save in the long run include filling your own cartridges, avoiding prefills, buying eliquid in bulk, buying relatively inexpensive ecigs. buying durable long lasting ecig mods(upgraded built-for-purpose ecigs that usually have very little resemblance to cigarettes) making juice yourself....etc.
Why would a person want to switch from cigarettes to this?
Better lung capacity, Avoiding smoking bans, Better smell, Better teeth, Better overall Health, Cheaper than Regulars. The list goes on and on...
Are there any long-term side effects of an e-cig?
some people report having negative reactions to propylene glycol, some report having negative reactions to vegetable glycerin. overall most people have reported a remarkable improvement in lung capacity and respiratory function after switching over from regular tobacco cigarettes, in many cases equal to those whom quit cold turkey without the nicotine withdrawal and weight gain symptoms.
Will it make a difference in their health?
In most Cases YES! once again regular tobacco being the other variable...one has lots more to lose from not switching over to a reduced risk alternative.

oh yeah-feel free to use that, cant guarantee you'll get a good grade though.
