In reading this
thread (not that I've read the
whoooole thing...) and some of the threads on the quit smoking forum, I was reminded of a few years ago when I lurked on a different quit smoking forum. I was trying to "get ready" to quit smoking, so searched for a forum to see if that would help.
I can't remember if they had an e-cigarette section. If they did, I don't know if I would have chosen to read it. What the heck is
that? If I had, it would have been because, hey, it was on the quit smoking forum,
so it must have something to do with quitting smoking, like the patch or gum.
I think we won a victory in having the e-cigarette forum added to their site. E-cigarettes being on a quit smoking forum helps legitimize them as an option as a smoking cessation product.
To me, it seems that's what some people were struggling against. There are people on the quit site who do not see e-cigarettes as legitimate smoking cessation devices, and they are not going to change their minds about that unless the FDA approves and regulates them as such. And they didn't want their board promoting e-cigarettes as a method to quit smoking.
It's a shame that some of the exchanges that were going on in those threads became so bitter and hurtful, but, otherwise, I think it's ok that the threads showed there is some debate on the matter. Heated debate. That's where vaping is right now - in the midst of debate.
Those threads will encourage people who are intrigued by the debate to look into vaping further before they make their decision whether they want to try it. I think that's a great outcome. I'm just guessing, but people who seek out information on e-cigs (and start calling them PV's!) are the ones most likely to succeed.
Those who are discouraged by the debate will likely be similar in beliefs as the current quit members who are opposed to e-cigarettes. They probably wouldn't have been interested no matter what was in those threads. And that's ok, too.
I think the struggle between viewpoints is at the core of the broader issue. Either it's regulated as a tobacco product or it's regulated as a smoking cessation device. IT BOGGLES THE MIND THAT IT COULD BE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME...unless you've tried it and it's worked for you. Almost effortlessly. And then, it still kinda boggles your mind.
Are there other options??? Can we change the debate?
