I normally resist commenting on his weight problem (we all have our stuff, ya know?) but this is one context where the hypocrisy is just out of control. He knows more than anyone about having a health issue caused by a lifestyle which is demonized and bullied by the rest of society... and yet he goes after people who are quitting smoking.

Before eCigs came along and gave the bullies another way to push smokers around, the tide was turning on the high BMI folks. New York was going after soda pop, until eCigs became a better target.

Obese people who are bullying vapers and smokers will get their comeuppance - all the health arguments are turning on them. When it hits them full force I hope they don't look to me to defend their lifestyle. A bacon and ice cream tax wouldn't bother me in the least, nor will it bother me to see insurance rates for the obese raised to smoker rates.

Bacon and ice cream don't make people fat and are not categorically harmful.

Again, if you say so. Choose something else then that you are less defensive about, some other thing that they want to tax that makes people fat but that most people enjoy but is not necessary to consume.

No specific food makes people fat. Overconsumtion makes people fat. (Actual medical issues aside) People pay taxes on what they consume, so those who consume more pay more taxes ;) If you want to set insurance rates based on bodyfat percentages, then go for it.

The we agree. The taxes on beer and wine should be repealed since they are not categorically harmful either. But apparently no one has told them they can only tax things that everyone agrees are "categorically harmful."

ICYMI, that was my point. They will go after the obese next and we will see all kinds of taxes on things like twinkies and soda pop (we have already seen that attempt)... whether those foods are what makes people obese or not.

It's just another attempt at a sin tax. None of us like it, but sooner or later I imagine every state will establish some kind of provision. The key will be figuring out the rates since if they use the current tobacco rates for e-liquids they may become prohibitively expensive. None of this mind you should be able to be applied to non-nicotine products ex. 0mg liquids and PV's.
If we can still buy our equipment without undue taxation and our base liquids uninhibited then the taxation that would occur from pharmaceutically metered dosing from 99% nicotine stocks should help mitigate the increase. This is provided that B&M shops can get and ensure pharmaceutically metered dosing to get 0mg liquids up to desired strength after the consumer has bought. This of course will be of little help should taxation be done on nicotine content and not a volume or per item basis.
People more than likely balked at the notion of the original sin taxes but we have come to accept them now. All we need is a few years to pass by after we're taxed because the average persons attention span these days probably isn't long enough to finish reading this post.

Sin taxes and other non-universal taxes get passed because they are "taxing somebody else" doesn't cost me, let them pay my share....

Wine taxes -- OK, I don't drink wine
Beer taxes -- what!! are you crazy!!
Liquor taxes -- now you've gone too far
Airline taxes -- no problem, don't fly much
Gas taxes -- so long as they're lower across the state border, it's OK
Telephone taxes -- we have to pay for the War of 1812 somehow
Sales taxes -- so long as there's exemptions for what I buy
And on, and on.....

So long as the pols can fragment out small segments of the voters, they feel safe, as many in favor as opposed to the tax is a wash for them.
