I have been a smoker for 40 years. My wife is also a smoker.

I have no lung disease or "normal" heart problems. I say normal because I have a somewhat rare condition called Neurogenic Bradycardia. Essentially, it is kind of a disconnect between my brain/nervous system and my hear/vascular system. I have an extremely low heart rate and very low blood pressure. Even if I do something strenuous, my heart rate might go up to 70 and BP to something like 100/60. Normally, my HR is about 42 with BP at 80/50. I pass out alot, but to the positive side, I can eat all the salt I want, fatty foods and other things because I have almost no risk of a heart attack.

The things that keep me going are stimulants and vaso-restrictors (things that constrict blood vessels). I refuse to take things like amphetamines, so I'm left with caffeine and nicotine. There is one medicine that they tried on me, and it almost killed me, so back to the "natural" stuff. I quit smoking for about 3 months and was having constant episodes of blacking out, so back onto cigarettes.

My wife, who is also a smoker, needs to quit smoking cigarettes, as she has high blood pressure. It is almost impossible for one person to quit if the other is smoking. I tried nicotine gum and patches, hated them both. So for her to stop, I needed to stop, but if I stopped, then my HR and BP would drop through the floor and so would I, literally.

Then I found e-cigs and vaping. It has become the answer to both problems. She smokes menthol, I smoke regular. From the first puff on an e-cig we knew we found our answer. Since there is essentially no smell, then when she quits, she isn't lured back by the smell. With the ability to use lower and lower ranges of nicotine content in the carts, down to 0%, she can slowly drop her nicotine intake, while maintaining the menthol flavor. I on the other hand, get my nicotine stimulant (hey, you can only drink just so many cups of coffee or diet cokes for the caffeine side) and don't pass out so much. In fact, since switching to the e-cig, V2 Red 12mg, I have only had one pass out episode in a week. This is a vast improvement over how I am normally.

I've even tried flavors and am really surprised. I like the cherry. And the way we figure it, she could even keep vaping menthol or other flavors at a 0% nicotine. That in itself will reduce her blood pressure.

So here is a case, rare that it might be, where nicotine is actually good for me and I've found a "delivery system" that I enjoy and is cost effective while at the same time a way to eliminate nicotine from my wife's life and making her more healthy.

First off I wish to say that I am very proud of you and your wife by joining the war on analogs. KUDOS!
Next I have a question for you; now that you have discovered vapeing, why quit? As you have stated (and it is very true) Nicotine is nothing more than a stimulant. There are no ill effects to others when you vape. Sounds like you wife can continue to vape with you and the both of you can be perfect allies for one another.

Again Kudos, welcome to the ECF, and I look forward to seeing more from the both of you so we can all celebrate you accomplishments!

As to the quitting part, that is actually what I was getting at. I do not need to, since the e-cig gives me an economical and effective delivery system, that I actually enjoy. At the same time, my wife can either decide to stop all together or go to the 0% nicotine Menthol flavor and accomplish the same thing as stopping.

As to the drugs to help with bradycardia, there are actually 2, but due to another condition I have, only one was viable. I took one pill under doctor supervision, within 30 minutes my HR was at 140, BP at 160/130. They literally had me on the table, paddles ready until they could slow it all back down. Remember for me, a normal HR and BP is actually high. To slow it down they had to use nitroglycerine pills. This then threw me into a tailspin in less than 5 minutes. HR went to 30, BP of 55/32. After about an hour they got things back to semi-normal. So that didn't work. The doctors did say that I could be given amphetamines to replace the caffeine and nicotine, I said "no thanks" to that one. Yeah, just what I want, to get hooked on speed.

The neurogenic part is so rare (about 1 in 100,000 people) there really isn't any drive for pharmaceutical companies to come up with something. I can't imagine what the cost would be for a pill. The way one doctor explained it is that it is kind of like my brain and nervous system is telling my heart and blood vessels "Hey, Dave's asleep, so slow down and relax any time you want". Most people with bradycardia simply have either a slow HR or low BP, not both. That's why the effects on me are really dramatic at times, but at least I can feel it coming on several minutes in advance. It doesn't matter if I'm standing, sitting, laying down, walking. I start feeling dizzy, then I know I had better sit or lay down fairly soon as I'm about to go out. About an hour or so later I come to, usually feeling like pure hell.

That is why finding the e-cig and the dramatic reduction of episodes has been fantastic for me. I just hope it keeps going on.

Great story... and sorry for your difficulties! At least you've found what works for you (and your bride).

One side of my wife's family (Loomis) had something somewhat similar to yours. Many had very low BP; one minute alert, the next dozing. So when anyone nods off now, they blame Loomitis

Best of luck to you and your wife!

Well, my wife wants to stop the nicotine, since she has slightly elevated BP. But now that we have learned that with e-cigs you can literally have your cake and eat it too, she likes both the menthol and cherry. So, she can wean herself off of the nicotine part, while maintaining something she enjoys. I assume there really would not be any real difference in flavor between 12mg nicotine and 0mg if the cart itself is flavored.

It might be the difference in blood uptake rate of the nicotine : with vaping it is slower. There are probably additional things in smoke that raised BP too.
