My old man lives down there. I still have family in Dry Prong. He wasn't there for Katrina, but his current wife was. After hearing some of her stories, even I am stocked up on certain things "just in case". And I live near Chicago! Anyway, a solar powered charger might be a good solution for charging your PV batts in a situation like that.

Webby OMG, how did you ever survive Camille in Bay St. Louis? Wasn't the storm surge gigantic? You've must have got up a hill or something?

Believe it or not we stayed on the second floor of a municipal bldg and watched the water come up the steps. If you know anything about the area, we lived on Felicity street (a few blocks from the bay) and our house was fine. My dad has old 8mm film of the storm and aftermath that still sends shivers down my spine.

One thing that stands out in my memory is the entire east side of our house was covered with porcupine quills. In the film you can see that they are thousands of pine straw strands that were embedded in the outer wall of the house. It was like carpeting.

My personal opinion is that it takes a major hurricane every 20 years or so for people to take them seriously. Even with Hurricane Betsy still fresh in the minds of the folks in MS, few actually left. People get complacent after a few years and after "false alarms" of storms that pass to the east or west at the last minute. They start believing that all the trouble of evacuating isn't worth the hassle.

I love the Gulf Coast and will probably never leave (again) unless a Cat 3 or stronger is coming. It's not that I think I'm bulletproof, I just know when to take the threat seriously and won't wait until the last minute to make my move. I live in Mobile now, but I'm across the bay in Spanish Fort and on a 300' bluff. I have a steel shelter, generator and keep supplies all year 'round, but anything over 125 mph and I'm outta here.

i'm from north east new jersey originally, and moved here to nola two years before katrina....i was told that the worst it ever got in my neighborhood was about two feet of water, and advised before the katrina evacuation to put my valuable etc. on top of my bed or on the kitchen counters...................i ended up with over 9 feet of water, had to kick the doors in to get inside because the floors had swelled up, and knew i wasn't going to be able to save anything once i saw the refridgerator in the living room and my computer monitor in the kitchen sink.............so, yeah, i moved uphill a bit, the neighborhood i'm in now only had 7 inches of water in the street and the house is raised three feet----i figure it can't get WORSE than katrina, so, unless the house totally collapses, my stuff should stay dry in this neighborhood at least.......

Hi hurricane alley members!

I'm in New Orleans, too, Treble. I have a solar panel that is supposed to be good for a small appliance, but I haven't checked whether I'll be able to hook up my batteries to it. I guess I had better get on that real soon!

I lost everything in Katrina, too. My neighbors were all fine, but my roof was lifted off by a tornado. Now wasn't Katrina just a blast...8-o

OMG! I'm in S Fla, thought I was all set for hurricane season, all my supplies organized in boxes, plenty of batteries ,flashlights, water, propane etc. Forgot about my ecigs!! Thanks for hitting me over the head with this thread, will need to make sure I have the batteries and my laptop fully charged and plenty of juice on hand. After Wilma we didn't have power for 10 days. Adding things to my "be prepared list" now.
