Webby OMG, how did you ever survive Camille in Bay St. Louis? Wasn't the storm surge gigantic? You've must have got up a hill or something?
Believe it or not we stayed on the second floor of a municipal bldg and watched the water come up the steps. If you know anything about the area, we lived on Felicity street (a few blocks from the bay) and our house was fine. My dad has old 8mm film of the storm and aftermath that still sends shivers down my spine.
One thing that stands out in my memory is the entire east side of our house was covered with porcupine quills. In the film you can see that they are thousands of pine straw strands that were embedded in the outer wall of the house. It was like carpeting.
My personal opinion is that it takes a major hurricane every 20 years or so for people to take them seriously. Even with Hurricane Betsy still fresh in the minds of the folks in MS, few actually left. People get complacent after a few years and after "false alarms" of storms that pass to the east or west at the last minute. They start believing that all the trouble of evacuating isn't worth the hassle.
I love the Gulf Coast and will probably never leave (again) unless a Cat 3 or stronger is coming. It's not that I think I'm bulletproof, I just know when to take the
threat seriously and won't wait until the last minute to make my move. I live in Mobile now, but I'm across the bay in Spanish Fort and on a 300' bluff. I have a steel shelter, generator and keep supplies all year 'round, but anything over 125 mph and I'm outta here.
