a perpetual motion e-cig! Like Rolex watches
Well, that is a good idea, but, given the fact that an e-cig takes a million times as much power as a rolex watch, you should have to move a lot. :)

Or, it should be supported by some other personal renewable energy sources:
- clothes made of solar cells,
- a hat having wind turbines on the top,
- underware producing bioenergy,
and shoes with buit-in batteries for energy storage purposes.

I think it could be a viable idea.

Underwear? Bioenergy? Oh you mean the old methane plant!! "Methane, powered by you":lol::lol:

Very interesting! So many of us have that "I can make it better" guy in us. I had a wacky idea to make one with a hand crank generator from a battery-less flashlight. I could see it now, just like BarryK with his e-cig-detonator, I would get the STRANGEST looks with that in public.

I did a mod almost just like the one in the op today. I took a battery connector out of a crappy battery and just soldered the positive and negative up to a battery holder just like in the op (from radio shack). This thing smokes awesome. I really enjoy the functionality of a manual switch, too.

The one i've just made is really ugly, it basically looks like heatshrink sticking out the end of an atomizer into a box. I think pretty soon i am going to scrap this one for parts (mostly the battery connector and battery holder) and make one that looks like a regular 901 battery with a wire sticking out that connects to a battery pack.

I couldn't fit a switch sideways (imo switch on the end would make me hold it weird), at the moment i am using the switch on the battery box which is a slide switch. I might build something just a little wider in diameter than a 901 battery, with a blue led on the end, wire sticking out the bottom, with a manual switch on side of the battery casing (like on a kissbox). Paint it matte grey with black cigarette lines. My current rig uses 4xAA NiMH but i think i might switch to a bigger type of battery.

I may put the led on the side next to the manual button, but then i kind of dig the cigarette look too, so we'll see. I'll try and post pictures.

Zach, You can just about get away with 3 ni/mh aa's - even with the low resistance atomisers they will only be pushing aroud 1100-1200 millamps.

With 4 AA's you have the potential to be pushing about 1500 milliamps through the atomisers - you may get more smoke than you need, but only for a short while.....

You'll need some current regulation in the circuit - this will also have an advantage in that the batteries will last much longer and the vapour will be more consistant.

When I get around to making my 4 AAA battery jobby, I'm intending to limit current to a constant 880/900 mA.

Barry,

I appreciate the warning. It gives off about the perfect amount of vapor just the way it is, but i'll look into regulating the current. I'm just starting on this electronics stuff having only soldered a few pickups and capacitors into some guitars (and a few other small jobs like this). Strangely, the e-cig battery is just about the perfect thing to experiment with if you're not that good with a soldering iron yet.

Your smoking rig is ugly as hell, barry.

Try cleaning your atomizers with this hookup. Dunk the atomizer in water and turn the switch on, it'll release a lot of gunk. I've had mine on underwater for well over 1 minute and it never has died. after you clean it, blow it out from the battery end. I got 4-5 little black chunks out today. I'm going to get some NiCD batteries next and see how they perform. They have a bit more punch than NiMH in some applications.

Really? I'm still on my original......3 weeks later. Strange. Although, I do not use it regularly. BUt when I do use it, it gets a workout.
If you can solder, you just need to add a jumper wire to the space occupied by a battery. Any wire should do, even a stripped wire bagtie, or paperclip if you can't get outta the house.

I feel your snowy pain. It's just under a foot deep around my house. stupid white sh*t!!

Yeah, barry is right. This mod is burning out my atomizers. One of them is particularly messed up. Gotta get a 3 aa setup. Currently snowed in, in michigan, all my batteries are dead and the 4aa setup is destroying my atomizers.

Hmm, maybe i was a bit hasty in my diagnosis. It seems there was a short in my connections and it was causing one small part of the atomizer to heat up extremely hot. After resoldering the battery connector to the wires, the atomizer i thought was toast actually works pretty good again.

I've determined that the 4xAA configuration is still running the atomizer too hot because it heats up way hotter than a battery does. It takes a while to cool down too, the smoke tastes too hot for a few minutes after i've smoked it.

and an edit for youfillintheblank: i just attached the battery pack to the end of the "broken" atomizer and put it in a shotglass of water. A bunch of juice came out and some grey/black chunks. The atomizer smokes pretty good now but i am still going to put in some kind of power regulator. Would be ideal if it was like a fully charged 901 battery all the time.

Actually, another edit, this time for barryk: hey barry, i don't know if you've taken apart a battery unit yourself or not, but what do you think of putting the pressure switch (the black cylinder the battery and connector are wired into) in the circuit and putting the whole thing inside a drilled battery casing? Do you think the extra power would overload the pressure switch?

Chunks are your enemy! Glad to hear it's workin alright. I got in touch with Madog about a power regulator and he gave me a link to Radio shack for the part. I'll send you the link if you like. I haven't gotten around to getting one yet. I don't think i'll be using this mod much as I just picked up my M401 from LitecigUSA. This thing is great! Every bit as good as DSE901

Yepp, taken a few batteries apart, but I always manage to destroy the pressure switch....

Not quite sure what you mean by the above though - when you say "...in the circuit.." do you mean the circuit for the voltage/current regulator? - if that's correct then yes, bloody good idea..

The only snag I can see is that the regulator chip would need a resistor to set the maximum current, and as we are talking about 850 milliamps or so, that would need to be a 2 watt resistor which is quite chunky in itself.

Success!

I took a used battery casing to house the wires and give a cigarette-like effect. I put a microswitch in the end, it's a push type that will stay on only as long as you have it pressed. The wires come out the cherry end of the battery casing and i screw it into an atomizer. The wires go to a 3xaa battery box i rigged up from 3 1xaa holders (couldn't find a 3x holder at radio shack).

It's covered in heatshrink but it works kinda like the screw driver.
