Ecigs do not emit any tar and tar is what kills people, not nicotine

If anyone doubts that ecigs are tar free, they can do a simple test. Take a long drag from the ecig (don't inhale it) now place a white kleenex over your lips and blow the vapor into it....nothing will appear discolored. Now take an analog and do the same thing....you will see a brown discoloration. This is the tar that goes into your lungs. Tar can only be created when combustion takes place and since e cigs do not burn, they are tar free. Think of tar as creasote that lines your chimney pipe.

As strange as it may sound, the tar demonstration test is what got me interested in smoking in the first place. My dad was a heavy camel smoker so there were always cigarettes around the house. I remember being around 10 or 12 years old and seeing the "Topol - the smokers toothpaste" commercials where a guy would take a drag of a cig and exhale it through a tissue. It would leave the brown/yellow discoloration. Being a curious kid, I had to try it. Again... and again... and again. Lame, yes... but very true.

Vapers don't have brown stains around the fingertips and nails, either.

In addition to the lack of tar, there are no MAOI's (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) in vapor that create a dependency from the sense of calm and satisfaction of lowered MAO B. Lowering MAO B increases levels of dopamine (the pleasure chemical) in the brain. So tobacco maintains a sense of well being in the smoker and makes them want more and more. That relaxed feeling you get after that cigarette you finally got to smoke on break is a result of this.

When you vape, the nicotine causes a release of dopamine. Other chemicals in tobacco enhance this by slowing the breakdown of dopamine and extending its lifespan in the brain. I think this is the reason that vapers find themselves using their ecig as a pacifier. We need more nic to keep up the dopamine production. Tobacco lengthens the time between "fixes" as compared to the plain nicotine in ecigs by slowing the metabolization of dopamine.

This is your brain on nicotine

I didn't rationalize - it was just something neat in a weird sort of way. I knew what it did to teeth and tissues but not to lungs and the rest of the body. That didn't even cross my mind. There was no rationalization whatsoever.

I didn't immediately become addicted but I am pretty sure it didn't help. I knew what they tasted like and I felt cool smoking them. When I started smoking full time, I was 14 or 15, had full access to cigs and was probably one of the only kids that was able to sneak them out. Mom was working, dad was passed out, I was smoking.

This was a poignant history - I can relate to the curiosity and the things some kids will do because it seems fascinating. Then the tobacco became the soother. Yeah when I'm tempted to blame myself too harshly for choosing (?) to smoke tobacco all these years, posts like this remind me of why it "worked" when I couldn't have known there were options. I'm not sure this makes sense but thanks for the touching post.
