effect of juice on coils?

In general the darker your juice the more it will gunk up your coils. I use an RY4 variant in my DIY juice and after a few hours of vaping on it the coil needs to be cleaned.
Speaking in general, e-liquids which are dark colored or sweet (sugars) will gunk up coils faster than clear-colored or non-sweet eliquids.
If you change your own wicks, you can "dry burn" or pulse fire bare coils when you remove the old wick. Fire your coils for 3 - 4 seconds, enough for the coils to glow red, then stop. Repeat as necessary. They gunk will burn off the wire. A char of ash will remain, which you can rinse off under the faucet.

Would the fact that horizon puts this "ceramic padding" instead of cotton in their coils make that effect any worse?
nope, it is the juice....if it is ceramic you could dry burn the coils and not burn the wicking from what I remember
No, it the juice.. The good thing about ceramic is you can dry burn and clean with the wick left in the coil. Just pulse till the coil goes clean and wick returns to white. then rinse.
When I was vaping a commercial pre mix coils would need service about every 12 ml because of gunk. My DIY flavor has no sweetners. With that I rebuild once a week or about every 40-50 ml. I diluted the pre-mix 4 to 1 and it still tastes good so there was a lot of flavoring in it apparently.
