Hi there.
Firstly, I'd like to say it's good to be back. I used to be a compulsive reader of this forum years ago and I'm glad to be back on the horse so to speak.

After several years of not being in the know with vaping, I recently got a new vape and I'm going through teething problems somewhat. So I thought I'd air my issues on here and see what you all think.

The mod is a Vandyvape 80w box squonker and I have two atties to run on it. I initially bought the Dead Rabbit to squonk with, but am now using the Pulse24. Several months ago I saw the Riptrippers video on it and yeah, had to buy it. I think it's far superior to the rabbit (except that it's a bit shorter - I like large RDAs for some reason)

Anyway, I've been vaping at work. Squonking is great - I work in construction and need my hands free. I've only ever really dripped since I got into vaping years ago and gosh is squonking a step up.

Here is my issue. I only have 2 batteries and the mod is a single battery system. My concerns/fears are always that I may run out of charge on a long shift. So I've been experimenting with different builds. My goal is maximum battery life. Therefore it's been a pickle trying to optimise my dripper.

I have 2 kinds of wire, a reel of fused clapton 24/32 and a reel of fused clapton 28/32. I am trying to work out the optimum coil (singular) to get the best experience. Obviously ramp up time is an issue, therefore no 25 wraps or whatever.

I've tried with the 24g fused a) 6 wraps (ramp up ridiculous) b) 5 wraps (ok and c) 4 wraps (it burned the wick for some reason, could have been the poor wicking AND now I am going to try using the 28g fused clapton.Any suggestions? I'm gonna have a crack at 6 wraps and see how it goes, I shall report back.

Also, what new stuff should I know about, having been out of the vaping scene for years?

Also also, I mix my own juice, recomendations on thinning the liquid? I'm currently using water but thought I'd give PG a crack. If so, what percentage?

Finally, what are everyones thoughts on the vaping holsters you can get on certain websites (i'm new, no linking allowed)?

I don't squonk, but I assume you like flavor and cloud. On a single battery mod where swapping a fresh battery in might be inconvenient, the simpler the build the better. That's true in general.

I'd go with the 28X2 fused Clapton at 6 wraps and see how you like it. Personally I'd switch to a simple Clapton for better ramp up and extended battery life. Fused Claptons are great but not for battery longevity. I'd even give plain old round wire a shot as a just because. A 26G simple coil might well perform better than you would expect, solving the whole battery runtime issue.

You want better battery life ? Stop using claptons, too much mass and they take longer to heat/cooldown
For even more, use a single coil dripper, I atm am using the recurve on mine but i'm getting (hopefully) a drop solo soon to have 2 builds with 2 Drops ( dripper mode on my original dual coil and squonking on my Solo)

I usually use a simple round wire build ( Kanthal a1 at 3mm Id, 0.63 0hms) i have 2 20700 (3000 MaH each)
I usually last about a full day on one cell, then again i don't have much time to vape during the day but the points are still there.

IF you're still not satisfied, get a dual battery squonker.

God, it has been years since I've used 26g plain. I don't have any handy, but I could get some. Why do you think it would be preferable? Wouldn't the total mass of the coil by the main determining factor?

Keeping your volts under 3.2 will allow your battery to run all the way down without activating voltage boost
I've never heard of voltage boost. Do all mods have this?

Dual battery isn't a big deal since I just take a second battery with me. As far as mass goes, I'm using the logic that more mass = more surface area, especially with fused wire as it's effectively a parallel coil hidden by the 32g. Also, subjectively I //feel// that I get a better vape from clapton, so it's a matter of getting optimum coil size.

Thanks for your input guys. I'm testing a coil now with 7 wraps of the 28/32. Quite a fast ramp up at 40 watts. Seems pretty good.

Also, what are the actual reasons that people use claptons? I know they look cooler and subjectively give a better vape, but does anyone know the actual mechanics of it?

Thanks

I use 28x3/40 fused claptons in my squonk mods. I use them in low profile single coil RDAs, mostly the gas mods gr1. My battery life is actually pretty good. The thicker outside wrap of your wire is probably going to be the reason you will see inefficiency.

I use a holster for my mods, but it wasn't designed for mods. It is a radio pouch for military/police. Because it is velcro staps, it is fully adjustable to fit a wide range of mods. It also has a strap to lock your mod in place if you need it. Here are some pics.

That's the fun part about rebuilding, experimenting to solve whatever is important to you....you very well might find a build that gets you slightly better run time, but not enough for all day, so just bring another battery and in 10 seconds your ready to go

Short version, more nooks and crannies to hold juice which can then be vaporized. That comes at the expense of more mass to heat, and higher current to make work well.

And they look cooler too.
