Not necessarily. Thunderhead creations make/made kanthal 0.5mm x 0.2mm. And if you can't find it, make your own like @RuiG has done:
Hammer time!!!

I know @AngeNZ, but I'm too lazy in some respects to try and make some. And I'm a TC user who can taste Kanthal, which makes things more interesting.

@GeorgeS, was thinking that you should be able to hit somewhere around 0.5 ohms and the round profile makes for easy wicking then. But it's definitely in flavour territory though.

I hear you. Coiling was OK, installing the coil was hard work but I got it in. But installing the wick, and thoughts of rewicking in future, had me switch it for a 0.5mm x 0.2mm coil. Which has a similar heat capacity, but not as much surface area as a 0.9mm x 0.1mm.

After getting a size that is easy for you to work with, I think flat wire offers a lower mass alternative to the exotics that many like to use for good surface area.

While most of my setups have 26-28AWG round wire, I do have a handful of setups with 28AWG flat wire. The collection of atomizers I use are very easy to build on and I've figured out a wicking stratagy that works for me. Some of the squankers in my profile picture have this build:

for me at least, winding, installing and wicking the above was a breeze.

Battery life is important to me so I don't own or have ever used any of the exotic wire and generally power my single coil setups with 30W or less.

@Archane, the other thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is twisted wire. I find it to be flavor wise between single wire coil and clapton coil. Just work with your wire choice and twist some up to get your ohms & wraps where you want. You get better surface area using your single wire you have on hand. Plenty of video's on how to twist wire out there from manual to using drills. Just an thought

    Where you least expect it....
To increase flavor with a round coil build is fairly simple. A microcoil for example will increase the surface area and provide a nice vape. Should try it and see how you like it. If you want to further increase the surface area, you can try a twisted microcoil.

Also, it does have little pockets where juice can sit as well.
