The black vs "platinum" are totally different coatings. I have one of each.

Platinum appears to be a metallic enamel of some kind, I don't know exactly. It is brittle, poorly adhered, and chips easily. The steel underneath appears to have been turned to a high polish which is probably not helping it stick.

The black material I am more familiar with and have actually used this in my last business to as a finish for hand-held remote controls. It's called "soft touch paint" and while there are a variety of formulations of it, they have all improved greatly in recent years and if applied properly should last much longer. It is sprayed on and requires a well controlled process - I doubt you could get similar results at home working with small quantities, certainly not from a dipped coating. It will also wear off eventually but so far mine are looking OK.

If your titanium eGo is looking ratty, you might try using sand paper, a spinning wire brush, or even paint thinner to remove it.

My black Ego came in yesterday and the vapor is great! If mine loses its coating I'll probably try some heat shrink tubing to repair the finish. If you are not familiar with heat shrink, it's used to insulate and seal electrical connections. HS is a flat finish rubber type material that starts out as a tube of thin rubbery material that slips over the item. It comes in various diameters and you should choose one that is fairly close to the size of the item you are covering. A BIC lighter passed back and forth under it is sufficient to shrink it. When you are through the coating will be tight, durable, and very close to the black finish that comes on the battery.

The cone is a different story, although I think that the right size HS tube would do the job on it. Find one that fits snugly on the large end of the cone and it should shrink to fit the small end as well as the large end. Electronic/electrical supply stores and auto parts stores should have it. The ones I have purchased were usually in bags of various sizes and lengths. The best size would be one that just slips easily over the battery before shrinking. When heated, it will shrink up to half its original diameter.

I don't know what all the fuss is about here. Is everyone so against the stainless steel look? Next to my Stainless eGo, my black one looks like a cheap garage sale item.

I have to agree. I bought stainless, black and titanium and like the stainless best. My titanium chipped yesterday and within a few minutes I had almost all of it peeled off with my fingernail. It reminds me of the blue coating that Palm used on the Zire 72 a few years back. Mine was silver within a few days of getting it!

im using a matte black eGo with no chipping on the exterior, but has some minor chipping on one battery in the end-most tip of the atty connector side (2 out of the 4 mounts). I noticed that the chrome finish to it is some sort of paint, because i was able to see thin film-like chips of it inside my carrying case. The color of what was left after the very thin chipping is copperish.

I also have discoloration on one gold atty of mine, which the paint seems to be an opaque film too, leaving a chrome color underneath it on some areas. I think this is caused by repeated exposure to heat, and the fact that the cone is trapping the heat inside like an oven :)

I have a platimum Ego that finally started peeling on the cone, decided I would like a 2 tone Ego better then a peeling one so I took a rag with just rubbing alcohol on it and cleaned the platinum off the cone, You will be amazed how easy it comes off!

Yep. 2 minutes with 70% isopropyl and a paper towel, and it's all gone.

The platinum finish started coming off of mine within the first two weeks of use - Started on the cone, and chipping on the battery, but like others have said, my black one still looks perfect.

I just removed (well.. peeled) the rest of the platinum off of the entire ego, and now it's a sharp looking stainless version. I actually like it better now... LOL Go figure.

This must be specific to the platinum ego, although my sister has two of them and hers still look perfect.

I know it's been awhile for this thread, but if anyone has the peeling/chipping problem:
My black eGo started chipping, so I took a potato peeler and scraped off the rubberized paint on both the atty and the battery (do it over a trash can). Finished it off with a cloth with some rubbing alcohol. Now I have a nice shiny steel eGo.
