ego-t leaking fix that works, finally

I started ecigs with Green Smoke a year ago but prefer the refillable method for several reasons. On a friend's recommendation I tried the Ego-T and have been happy with that for many months, EXCEPT for the leaking problem. Messy and wasteful even with a new silicone cartridge cap often. There's lots of advice on the problem out there and believe me I tried it all but results were minimal. I was seriously considering switching to another system, but it recently occurred to me that there might be some way to use the thin mesh fabric inside my used up Green Smoke 'cartomizers' to control the flow of juice going from the tank into the ego-t wick. (I haven't used other non-refillable systems but they probably use a similar liquid holding fabric. Worth checking.)

With very little trial and error this idea produced an easy fix that actually works well consistently. The reason I'm making my first post - hoping it helps other Ego-T fans. Here's what I do:
  • Remove the mesh fabric from old Green Smoke cartomizers; you don't need to be delicate about getting into the GS cartomizer but try not to stretch the mesh when taking it out and unrolling it. Rinse mesh with hot water until the old liquid is out and pat dry on a paper towel. I give it a final alcohol rinse and pat dry just to be sure it's completely clean.
  • Cut the mesh into squares or circles that will roughly cover on all sides the area around the atomizer wick where your cartridge sits (one GS mesh makes about 6 pieces). A shape that's a little larger than the bottom of your cartridge in places doesn't seem to matter because there's room to spare, although too big a shape might be pulled off when you take the cartridge out to refill it. Other than that, the hole punched by the wick holds the mesh on the cartridge nicely when you take the the cartridge out to refill.
A piece of mesh lasts several refillings but eventually the hole will be too big to slow the flow adequately and it's time for a new piece. (I first punched a hole in the mesh for the wick but that didn't help the main problem of too much liquid going into the wick so don't bother. The wick will create an opening that's just right for a slower flow when you insert and twist the cartridge.)
  • Carefully place the mesh piece on the wick area of the atomizer as centered as possible. I use tweezers.
  • Insert the filled cartridge and give it a full turn whether or not the cap is new. The GS mesh is thin and squashes nicely to seal without forcing the cartridge to sit higher.
  • If you don't immediately get a good vape with a new piece of mesh give the liquid a while to seep in. Happens to me occasionally but it's temporary.
If any of this is confusing it should be self-evident when you try it. It's really very easy.

I assumed Green Smoke mesh is safe to use since it is an integral part of their combined atomizer and cartridge. I'll be looking for similar fabric online when I run out of old GS cartomizers so if you have any advice about ecig mesh fabric please post.

I'll try this if I ever get an eGo Tank that leaks...

I have had zero issues with leaks... at all.

wish i knew what it was I was doing right so I could share it with you all...
but I learned how to avoid leaks by reading these forums LOL

I suspect I may never get a leaky tank... Always in a quest for better, I'm gonna try some CE2s soon as pay day comes. ;)

How big a problem is leaking with the tanks?
Have any improvements been made.
I've seem many problems listed with other products like smokymizers and clearomizers that seem to have been resolved, at leat I've never had a leaky clearomizer or shorting smokymizer.
I'd like to try the tanks, but I really don't want to have to mod them.

As stated, for many, maybe most, it's not a problem at all.

I think the problems of leaky tanks we see reported here may be caused by 3 things:

1. Exuberance.
I think it may be possible that people are simply over doing it... drawing too hard, chain vaping(though I vape like a fiend and have no problems, I do so with SLOW, LONG draws...

2. Knockoffs.
Let's be honest, there are a ton of Knockoffs and we don't know whether "ECF member A" is using an actual Joye device or not.... and in many cases it seems they don't either. I'll say I would not expect the same performance from an iPhone I bought for 1/4 the price from a random website based in China.

This next one may be the biggest issue:

3. You always hear from the unhappy people.
It's the 1st rule of customer service and one to keep in mind when reading reviews and forums like these: 90% of the complaints come from 10% of the customers... Simply, unhappy people are more likely to voice their opinion. Your mention of the non-battery frying Smokys pretty well reinforces this idea.

Welcome to ECF and a great first post. As someone else here once said "if I had :2c: for every failed tank system I'd be retired". This could potentially help many that are having tank problems

Most tank systems do work. Heard anyone complain about carto tanks failing? No, but we get a new thread about eGo tank problems several times a day here.

maybe not "failing", but certainly reports of them not working properly... can't punch the cart, cut the slit too small... too big... and of course... leaking.

You may not read as many reports compared to eGo-T because let's be honest... how many more eGo-T's do you think have been sold?

NOTHING is perfect for everyone, because nothing is perfect.

I think that most Vapers would be better off with lower expectations ;)

I don't like the tanks not just because they can be very finicky and leak alot. Even when the tanks are working, they dull TH and flavor

5 months in with my Joyetech Ego T and still get great TH, vaper and flavor. I suppose you've gone with a knockoff in the past? No need for me to do any upgrades or mods. Perfectly happy with what I'm using. Maybe the juices are to blame or vaping style. A learning curve for newbs that buy any PV are an adjustment. I've given PMs to early users of Ego Ts and they are happy with the assistance to getting them to work properly. I'm no pro, but it works for me.

It seems people either have plenty of Ego-T problems or no problems at all, so I'm thinking knockoffs are the basic problem. I got my EgoTs from TheVaporPro - looks like a knockoff, and Unsmoke.us - supposed to be genuine JoyeTech but I'm not sure. What supplier do you use for genuine Joyetech products? Another question - are companies posted on EFC's Forum Suppliers known to be reliable? I'm wondering what the standards are because I saw nothing on that page about qualifications.

I've never had a problem with my two 1000mah batteries (8 months old) and one 650mah passthrough (4 months old). I would like to replace atomizers and cartridges with the real thing. Just as soon not have to deal with fixes at all.

And I appreciate all of you who've replied helpfully!

Edit: TheVaporPro claims it sells only genuine JoyeTech products. True? If so, my confusion continues...
