You can buy it through McMaster Carr for 3-4$ for a foot of it in 3/8" or so...you will separate the woven strands to get wick sized strands, so basically a foot of rope will make thousands of wicks!
Or you can use the wick from an old CE2 ceramic cartomizer/clearomizer (if you have one) - as far as I know it works fine.

... I have heard that it might be fiberglass or silica rope but there is not a 100% sure answer. I am asking because there are major safety concerns about fiberglass and wanted to make sure that this is safe since we inhale it.
Which fiberglass/glass fibre? That's a very broad term and there are many different types available of various chemical composition.

As far as what's actually used, with the Chinese there is not a 100% sure answer, just guesses.

Never mind the silica wick. Check out this thread. The tea bag wick might work better.

Silica wick stuff:

PM me with your address and I'll send you a few inches of the recommended silica rope I got from McMaster Carr. They sell it for 3.61 a foot and $4 for shipping. A few inches will last a lifetime.

Here's the link http://www.mcmaster.com/#=ciq9b1 round 3/8 is what I ordered. - not sure width matters but round has more pure silica.

I'm out of the tank repair business, so it's just sitting here for the next time I have to repair something.

WillB, the stuff I got from McMaster Carr looked, felt, and behaved exactly like the stuff I pulled out of my tanks.

Wicks are in every atty I've seen and I too worry about their composition. I now use REOs and dewick 306 attys to minimize their use. The one wrapped in the coil stays, but that has less tendency to break apart. I think if we were inhaling the loose fibers our tongues and mouths would get itchy first.
