OK, I am on the Evolv beta team, and I have been a beta tester since the first nickel experiments. Here is what I can add to the discussion.
No, safety testing on NI coils in VW mode has never been done because that is not its intended use. However, I can tell you from first hand experience that if you get the NI too hot it will simply pop. NI is much more fragile that Kanthal. You will not hit a point where you are breathing vaporized NI unless you are hitting it at the moment it pops the coil. I see little danger.
TC varies greatly depending on who mad the electronics. Evolv and Yihi do it very well, other MFGs do so less well. That is why some Mods work great in TC mode and others dont.
TC is totally dependent on resistance. so in some cases its not the Mod but rather the Atty that will give poor results. Many attys change in resistance or have high resistance themselves. Stable resistance is critical to good TC.
Some Mods work with NI coils in VW dependably because they really arent reading the resistance OR CURRENT that well. If the Mod read current well your vape would change as the resistance changes, because Ohms Law states that as resistance changes so will the current. These Mods are probably only reading current at the beginning of the puff rather than in realtime.
If you set a low wattage, it will run low current, and you can probably find a sweet spot where NI tastes good. If you are running too much current for NI it will taste burnt or pop the coil.
Bottom line, is that if you arent getting good results with TC and NI, you either have lower quality elctronics in your Mod, or you have a less than optimal atty.
Not sure if any of that made sense.
Bottom line, if you want good TC, go with a mainstream MFG like Evolv and Yihi, and use a quality atty.
