The following link will lead you to a petition opened today (11/20/09) with the intention of closing on 1/31/10. Here's how it works. Sign the petition at the following link and the letter I'm posting here will be sent with all undersigned to the FDA, any elected official (local, state or federal) that we can get our hands on, media outlets and anti-smoking groups. Last petition of this nature received in the neighborhood of 14,000 votes...I'm going for 20,000 before sending. Please promote the link anywhere and everywhere you can. I will begin promoting this with any and all manufacturers of e-cigs and liquid tomorrow. GET INVOLVED AND LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

The link is:

The letter (which can be read at the link as well) is as follows:
(I can still correct typo's or technical info so feel free to point em out)

Dear Sir,

We the undersigned require your immediate attention regarding potential legislation effecting electronic cigarettes. These devices offer benefits of such magnitude as to not only make the matter one of life or death for the millions of Americans addicted to tobacco products but also to literally benefit every citizen of this nation.

Electronic cigarettes offer tobacco users an alternative means by which to control both their nicotine cravings as well as physical habit. Most are finding the transition from standard forms of smoked tobacco to the e-cigarette to be as easy as switching brands with unofficial success rates believed to be in excess of 70%. With millions of Americans currently nicotine dependent this represents not just a significant increase from the under 10% offered by current cessation methods but is being heralded as a miracle by many. While it is true that many individuals will choose to continue long term use of electronic cigarettes the same could be said of any individual wishing to satisfy their nicotine dependency with over-the-counter products such as nicotine patches or gum.

As additional benefits these devices do not burn any form of organic material, have no open flame and produce no ash, butts or excessive amounts of packaging. The nicotine is delivered into the body by vaporizing the e-liquid and could be most closely related to inhalers and not cigarettes. The fact that their is no smoke being emitted eliminates the dangers of second hand smoke, affords little to no perceivable odor and causes none of the yellow staining as tobacco would. The lack of open flame alone is a benefit which reaches every sector of the population due to the current number of wild-land and structural fires which occur annually from the improper disposal of smoked tobacco products. All of this is achieved from a single device which can be considered no more disposable than a flashlight and will not be found littering our roadways and waterways.

For those unaware of the devices themselves they are a simple apparatus typically consisting of three primary parts: A battery, an atomizer which vaporizes the e-liquid and a cartridge containing the e-liquid. Common ingredients found in e-liquid are nicotine, typically available in levels from 30mg to 0mg along with water, food grade propylene glycerin, vegetable glycerin and natural flavorings. All of these substances have previously been approved by the FDA prior to ever being combined to form e-liquid. While ingredients could potentially vary and trace chemicals may be present (such as those found in the anti-freeze agents for food) they come nowhere close to the nearly five thousand chemicals and carcinogens currently present in various forms of tobacco products.

We the undersigned ask that these benefits not be ignored by our legislators and elected officials and that they understand that it is flat out there responsibility to ensure they remain available to us. We ask that pharmaceutical companies and tobacco manufacturers be allowed to share, but not take sole control of, this breakthrough. We understand the need for manufacturers of e-liquid to maintain and adhere to certain safety protocols as is necessary to ensure a standard of public health which can easily exceed that set forth by tobacco companies. Most importantly however, we ask that you preserve our right to decide for ourselves.

Our sincerest appreciation for your diligent consideration of this important issue.

(NOW PROMOTE...PROMOTE...PROMOTE) Please

Lose the reference to anti-freeze and I'll sign it.

Nowhere
I found a couple issues but otherwise everything else looks good and I've signed it.

...Common ingredients found in e-liquid are nicotine, typically available in levels from 30mg to 0mg along with water, food grade propylene glycerin, vegetable glycerin and natural flavorings...

It's propylene glycol, not glycerin.

...While ingredients could potentially vary and trace chemicals may be present (such as those found in the anti-freeze agents for food) they come nowhere close to the nearly five thousand chemicals and carcinogens currently present in various forms of tobacco products.

Personally, I would leave out the part about antifreeze. I would put something along the lines of:
...trace chemicals may be present, in levels similar to current commercial food production standards and so they come nowhere close to...
The wording may need to be tweaked, but you get the idea. Other than that it looks good. Hopefully, it'll help!:thumbs::thumbs:

Actually I specifically mentioned it as the FDA used that as a method to promote negative opinion. Based upon information I've been able to find that chemical is found not only in regular cigarettes but in an antifreeze used for food! Seems they didn't quite want to point that out.

Apologies if I was blunt initially. I can be so without meaning to. Oldfart-itis.

My intent in suggesting that be deleted was to ensure that any possible negative connotations someone skimming through could get from that part, you know it's going to be skimmed, were avoided.

Something like this petition needs to be not so much sugar-coated, but presented with no negative references so the intended recipients may actually look at it. I hope that made sense...

Honestly hope my observations don't detract from the kudos you deserve for your efforts Canute!!

EDIT: ya posted while I was typing! Again, good show Canute!

Actually I completely agree with you and appreciate the feedback. This petition isn't mine......it's ours. Not going to accomplish a dang thing alone obviously. As far as the date in which I close the petition (if in fact that's even the way too go with it) I will do so when it appears most advantageous to us as a community. For instance if we determine that legislation specifically pertaining to PV's or e-liquid is imminent. Till then I'm thinking that letting it ride and collecting every signature we can get our hands on is the best approach. In the meantime sending anyone who wants to know what all this is about to it, referring to it in the letters people are writing to their local officials, media etc. I suggest everyone write the address down and stick it in their wallets/purses. I see no reason why it would have to be closed in order to be utilized. Anyone who is seeing local legislation pending in there area....then this is YOUR petition right now. I am pleased that I asked people to share feedback because it's becoming an excellent source to send someone too to get clear and concise testimonials regarding this issue. (and of course it's only been up for 16 hours). Obviously though guys the key is getting the snowball rolling. It can't be just us (forum members and those using pv's) signing. If this is going to actually have an impact it will be because we all made it happen. Signatures by non-smokers who support us will have the most impact to a large segment of the population. Also continually referring to it in our posts since this forum seems to constantly have new members and undoubtedly just people trolling through. Any suggestions of any nature are welcome and anything I can do I'm committed to doing. I suggest everyone be thinking of any means possible to promote it. And don't limit that to smokers. Some of my personal best advocates right now are those who are sold on the fact that smokers may not be stinking up their airspace anymore! And of course many will offer support simply because they are fed up with big business and government continually revoking our rights. Anyone who sees you on the street and asks what the heck it is that your smoking.....should get the address. Besides if their interested in PV's for themselves it's an ideal place to send em.

For now let's just do the ole' everyone needs to tell at least 3 people...and have them tell 3 people....and.........

Two suggestions;
1) use a spell checker = "...it is flat out there (should be 'their') responsibility..."
2) Please add Fire Fighters and Police departments and associations to your list of recipients.

Very straightforward and purposeful. I've signed on

Good Job!

Corrected. And while your recipents are duly noted...please remember this is not about "my" recipients. My hopes are that this simply becomes a single petition which we all utilize. Keep gathering signatures and testimonials and anytime any person or organization expresses negative opinion refer them too it. 20,000 signatures was simply a number I yanked out of the air. WE will close it when WE decide that the hammer is falling and it's time. Then it's going to get shotgunned to anyone who has any ability to effect change in the matter. And I will need input from everyone to develop a list of who those individuals and organizations will be.
