Thank you for contacting me about electronic cigarettes. I appreciate your correspondence and hope that you find this response helpful.
As you may know, electronic cigarettes are a battery-powered alternative to traditional cigarettes that produce a vaporized nicotine solution in order to imitate the process of smoking. While many advocates of the new product say that these "e-cigarettes" have helped them to quit smoking traditional cigarettes and argue that they contain fewer carcinogens, evidence on both the long-term health effects of e-cigarette usage and their secondhand impact remains limited.
Throughout my career in public service, I have worked hard to develop and promote policies to reduce the harmful impacts of smoking and improve health, and I will continue to monitor the issue of electronic cigarettes closely. I appreciate your insight on this issue, and I will keep your concerns in mind should any relevant legislation come to the Senate floor for a vote.
