It happened to me. After I quit smoking back a couple years ago I developed ulcerative colitis. Was hospitalized a few times, last time I was so anemic I almost died. The people the hospital never seen levels as low as mine.

I'm on meds now and am a lot better.

So yeah, for some people it can kill them to quit. It almost killed me.

I remember when you went into the hospital, and this story made me think of that. I am glad to hear that you are doing better, I enjoy your posts.

Clearly quitting can be medically difficult and require attention when there are complications.
But THIS story? What are the odds that an emergency room doc is going to "in a couple hours" reach and deliver a diagnosis that "you have to keep smoking". Really? MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE a doctor could diagnose a complication from having quit - but they'd STILL not resort to "go back to smoking" - they'd come up with a different path to quit, or support medication, or a referral for the complication...etc.
I call it.

I don't have any real physical symptoms from quitting, but my depression has returned in a big way. I guess there is probably some truth to claims about MAOI's in cigs. I was fine for the first month of vaping, but these last couple of weeks have been horrible. Constant worry, doom, and dread. The FDA thing, and this Syria nonsense isn't helping either...

Yes, I agree. I cannot see a physician recommending smoking to anyone.

You cannot know 100% that this guy is lying or telling the truth. The only way to do so is to have the doc write the excuse slip, follow through and have the boss call.

I was married to an alcoholic and drug addict. Believe me when I say, they become the most believable liars.

You almost have to think differently yourself in order to catch them in the lying game. For instance, the guy comes back with the slip, you call the number. The person on the phone confirms the diagnosis. You think, ok, the guys telling the truth. Not So Fast. The way an addict thinks, he has that covered. Number on slip is actually to a buddy. You have to look up the Dr's number and then make the call. If you just compare the numbers and they are different, the addict has a believable story for that: it's the doc's personal office number.

God, does this bring back memories.

Back to the OP, possible? Yes. Probable? Who knows unless you track it down.

It does not have to be an all or nothing situation...

Encourage him to vape when and where he can't smoke...
Feed into his delusion (if that's what it is) get him on some good heavy nic 24mg, and let nature take it's course...

I vaped for about 2 1/2 months while still smoking... Eventually I was vaping more and smoking less without even realizing it...
later I quit all together. I never intended to quit smoking, it just happened. I was a 40+ year smoker at 3+ packs a day.

Even if he never completely quits, less smoking and more vaping has to be better!
