I decided I needed to try VV, and this circuit got my attention.

While I was filling out the stuff for a free sample of the TI chip, I noticed overnight shipping was an option, I figured there was no way they were going to overnight a FREE sample, but went ahead and chose it as the shipping option anyways. The next day I came home from work to a surprise package, woo TI is awesome!

Anyhow, after reading through this whole thread, I felt pretty comfortable with how this worked, and decided to throw something together.

There was a few people in here who talked about running the chip without capacitors, and I couldn't see any real reason that in this application that would be problematic, so I decided to not use the capacitors, and try to squeeze a small trimmer pot and 1/8 watt resistor right onto the chip itself to save room.

I also didn't bother adding an LED, and just have the one main fire switch.

I had some 14500 batteries around, so I built it around a minimal AA sized battery holder, found at radioshack.

I used Sculpey (an oven bake polymer clay) to cover it up a bit, and flare out the bottom for a nice base to stand on, and left a little hole for access to the potentiometer.

It turned out great, this thing is working wonderfully!

So I built my "mod" today.. got the chip, resistor, Pot and capacitors installed and decided to test it before putting it into the box.. Connected the 2 batts, and BAAAAM. one of the capacitors literally blew up ! sent burning piece everywhere, burnt a hole in my pad on my desk and in my shorts !... I checked everything and the polarity was right...

What could I have done wrong for the Capacitor to literally blow up ?

The electrolytics (aluminum can type) usually only explode if you hook them up backwards or put too much voltage on them. I've managed to avoid that and never had one explode on me. I've heard of them exploding with age and wear, but if that was a new one, I suppose it could have been defective. Hehe, Li-Ion batts are not the only thing we have to worry about.

Ok so here are the photos of the new 14500 box... first guts and empty space......

Then empty space + carto or atomizer.....

Firing.... pretty blue led....

another genaral view without the flash....

Led and pot are replaceable... used a 14 pin IC socket that was cut down for each one..... for those days when you want to change your color........

and forgot to mention... the connector is flush in the box... ie reason for so much epoxy... didnt want any juice leaking into the box........ There is a hole in the cover to make adjustments for voltage without having to pull the cover off.... used rare earth magnets again to secure the cover to the box.... Now onto the next project...

These were Tant... not Aluminum.. After the explosion (that's what it was.. loud and hot) I checked and the polarity was right... hmmm

The only reasons I can think of:

  • Reversed polarity
  • Too much voltage
  • Passed its life expectancy

IME, capacitors passed their life expectancy tend to bulge and leak. I suppose you could have just gotten a bad one too.
