So this came up in many a thread and, as a new vaper, I've always been confused by what exactly this means. Here is a quote from another thread from this morning:

2 things:

1) keep plenty of atomizers on hand. It's the #1 reason people get frustrated with vaping...

Hmmmm, I've heard comments along these lines many times but I'm confused by a few things.

1) How do I know when an atty needs to be replaced vs. just needs to be cleaned?
2) How long does the average atty last?
3) Is there a place to buy them cheap and in bulk? I just switched over to a Janty Stick and my wife uses Npros. Just so this post isn't about me and my e-cig set up, please feel free to suggest other places for other devices

Any help would be appreciated.

Attys are like light bulbs. The coils will burn out eventually. Keep a good supply of spares. When they go cold, they're most likely dead. More tips at; http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/e-cig-technical-issues/31787-ecf-troubleshooting-guide.html

2) How long does the average atty last?

Some last weeks, and some last months. Depends on how you use, and treat them.

3) Is there a place to buy them cheap and in bulk? I just switched over to a Janty Stick and my wife uses Npros. Just so this post isn't about me and my e-cig set up, please feel free to suggest other places for other devices

Don't know about the janty, but the NPRO (RN4081) parts are cheap from; Wholesale & Retail Best E-smoking Supplier

Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, so replace only if they stop heating up at all then? My wife and I were using the same 3 Npros and Attys for the last month and a half. No atty has stopped completely. Some don't produce as much vapor as others and some have a taste that kinda reminds us of campfire. We've tried cleaning but no luck. Wondered if this just meant that they needed replacement attys.

1) How do I know when an atty needs to be replaced vs. just needs to be cleaned?
When your atty starts giving you an "off" taste that won't go away, or the draw starts getting harder, it's time to clean your atty. When it dies completely, or works poorly and cleaning doesn't help, it's time to replace it.
2) How long does the average atty last?
It's a crap shoot. I have six attys that have lasted me two months so far, and show no signs of slowing down. But half of them could kick the bucket today for no apparent reason. Or they could last me many more months. I rotate them frequently so as not to strain any one atty at a time.
3) Is there a place to buy them cheap and in bulk?
If you buy a lot at once, I suggest looking at healthcabin.net or heaven-gifts.com. Good prices. If you just order a few at a time, look at rockymountainvapor.com, you'll save money with free shipping. I'm not sure where to get Npros, I haven't used them.

I hope that helps.

There are many different things that can happen with attys. They can be tested to see if they're burnt out, if not, they can be cleaned. That's why I supplied the link;

Ah, sorry about that. I thought that was the link out to cleaning atty thread I'd seen before which confused more than helped. That PDF was very helpful. Thanks.

Also, to everyone else, thanks for the input.
