Hi there,

So I'm new at the whole vaping thing, but what I'm experiencing is very similar to something I experience periodically, even when I was smoking. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if you know of anything to stop it.

It seems like certain flavorings or sweeteners cause my taste buds to completely whack out..I never could figure out what it is that causes it, but it's completely affecting my vaping experience!

A couple of days ago I bought a grape flavored juice. It wasn't a really strong flavor, but definitely there. I will say that the only flavors I've had up till now have been sweet-ish (pina colada, cheesecake, grape).

Now EVERYTHING is tainted by this sickly-sweet flavor that's just sitting in my mouth....I've been trying to drink at least 120 oz of water a day, and I just got a flavor that I was so excited to try (pecan pie) but everything is overpowered by GRAPE.

I'm a bit worried that vaping all the sweet stuff is going to keep messing with my taste buds. Has anyone else had this happen, and if yes, did you find a fix for it?

What's the PG/VG ratio you're vaping? PG is sweet, while VG is not as sweet. When a particular juice is too sweet for me, I cut it with straight VG. You might be able to acquire some VG where you buy your juice. I get my stuff mostly from TastyVapor and they will even mix my juice without any sweetener. You might want to contact your juice supplier and ask them a few questions about sweetness in their juices and how to cut it down.

PG has a sweetish taste to it naturally, as does VG (taste however is subjective). That said I'm not sure that what you have is vaper's tongue. I had a rather bad case of it a few weeks back. Generally speaking with vaper's tongue one either doesn't taste anything at all, or does not taste their vapor at all.

Without knowing your PG/VG ratio I would guess that it is likely that one or the other is coating your tongue. This can be addressed by using palate cleansers, changing tooth pastes and mouth rinses or simply increasing the attention you pay to your tongue when doing your oral hygiene.

Also it should be noted that having a "wonky" sense of taste is a side effect of smoking cessation as well. It takes time for the taste buds to regenerate after the tobacco smoke kills them.

I've not experienced this, so I'm no help here.

Just curious, does everything taste sweet now, or like sweet grape?

What juice delivery device are you using, clearo, carto, etc? I assume you are switching flavors in one of these. Maybe you need to clean it out better between flavors? I know some of my juices do stick around for a while, especially the stronger ones. If you want to test it, just fill a new device with a different juice. That will either solve it or you'll know it's not that.

Since this kind of thing happened to you before you vaped, who knows, you might just be really sensitive to the last scent you smelled. Taste is like 90% the result of smell. Maybe vaping non-flavored juice for a tank or two would help the transition. If it's that everything is sweet now, you could try vaping a tart/sour flavor for a bit. Best of luck with it!

What's the PG/VG ratio you're vaping? PG is sweet, while VG is not as sweet.

Actually:

PG is odorless and almost tasteless....It has a faint sweet taste. It carries flavor well.

VG is SWEET....It is thick.....It produces good vapor and is used in fog machines at concerts.

When eliquids lose flavor (vapors tongue).....brush tongue with toothpaste + rinse, vape unflavored nicotine base for a few minutes and drink water.

You will taste eliquids just fine soon after.

Two words: tongue scraper. More people should be using these things anyway. You would be surprised at what water, toothpaste, and mouthwash won't get off of your tongue. The tongue is like a sponge. It takes more than surface cleaning to get it clean. You need something that can push down onto it to squeeze everything out of it.

Good suggestion!

Suggestion: I was going to suggest this earlier, but couldn't remember the name of the damn thing. I need to get a new one myself.

Orabrush | Tongue Cleaner – Tongue Scraper- Cure Bad Breadth

They also make one for dogs too, that has kind of a gravy flavored (apparently) paste that you put on the bristles so the dog likes licking it and it cleans the tongue rather well.

Thanks for the replies, all! I'm heading out to work so have to make it quick.

Considering that it's something that I've dealt with before, unfortunately the tongue brushing and gargling doesn't seem to work. I think its something to do with my actual taste buds over-reacting to artificial flavorings. I had only vaped the grape for like 1/2 day so I dunno if that's the offender or if it was vaping sweet stuff for so long finally did it.

As it happens, I was able to start vaping my pecan pie (100% organic VG from Virgin Vapor) and since it isn't sweet it seems my taste buds have calmed down some.

I was just starting to worry because almost all the juice out there is sweet and I didn't know if it would adversly affect me long term.

Hopefully I can learn to regulate it and find more savory/non sweet flavors to mix it up with.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions--I will still take some of the advice that was offered up.

I have noticed that if I vape flavors of similar profiles for a long time; that I can't seem to taste them all that well. This is why I've been working on developing a go to mixture of a sour vape, a sweet vape, a menthol, and I've been looking for a decent cinnamon. I've found that this helps from my tongue getting bored with the flavors.

For example I tend to keep a sweet tobacco, a menthol and Voodoo Cola by Hooligan Vapes in a pretty constant rotation. Though I'm constantly trying new juices too.

I still don;t understand how you can taste the grape flavor in all yo vape.
Did i understand the issue correctly?

As mentioned already VG is sweet naturally. If your not wanting sweet vapes why not go to tobacco flavors.
there are so many reasons your taste buds go wacky, but the really important suggestion, or my 2 cents;
if you are changing flavors/juice, change your tank, carto, clearo, whatever it may be.

doesn;t matter how you clean it, it will always hold a hint of the previous flavor, and grape is a strong flavor no matter at what % it's mixed at. Me, I'm a grape lover and I like it strong and sweet, so I have grape only tanks!!!

good luck with your "BUDS" and keep asking questions, eveyone will help when they can.

Hi there,

I appreciate your frustration with my question--I came up with a better way to explain it this morning.

If you've ever been in Ketosis, that's what it's like...a constant sweet aftertaste that seems almost systemic. It would be great if that's what it is, but I haven't been low-carb in a long time. It's got to be some reaction to something I'm ingesting--damned if I can figure out what it is.

I was using 50/50 PG VG mixes. The grape was a 90/10 VG PG mix, now I'm at 100%. I really am not sure what's causing it.

Now that I've been up and around, it's back. ICK!

Thanks all for the words of encouragement--I may just have to wait it out and hope it goes away on its own.

When I drip straight VG and vape it, to me it is less sweet than when I drip straight PG . I don't know how many people have actually done this in two separate drippers, but I have, hence my opinion. Everyone's taste is different and I never said VG "wasn't" sweet.

In any case, I hope OP solves the problem.
