When I first seen this I thought the gauges were messed up and had water inside them. Turns out they are filled with glycerin to dampen movment and protect from vibration.

Decades ago they used oil. Although this is the first I heard of using glycerin. They could have used glycerin for years and I wouldn't have known. But glycerin should work fine too.
