Sitting down, facing forward.
Did I mention I hate cold weather? I feel like Randy getting ready to go to school in "Christmas Story" every time I take Leo out for a walk!

Willie, maybe you might want to have a look at cloning software if you're not comfortable with Acronis being able to do that for you. When I did mine, I wasn't too worried because I had the original install CD in my grubby little mitts as well as all the software handy on another drive. That's a big advantage.

no help forums for hp or acronis? fingers crossed for you, willy!

Ah heck, I'll figure it out, will just take more time and research. I did find forums, trouble is I don't know any of the posters and I have no idea if the info is good, I didn't see much feedback from admins or techs, just members giving each other advice. I can already see the frustration in my wife, "You gave me this gift, you told me you'd install it and it's been a week." My own fault for not researching this before giving it to her but the sales pitch was, the included free software "makes it easy". I guess that's not a lie, it's just the instructions are far from easy "for me" to understand.

I'm running different backup imagines using the different options on separate USB drives to cover my ..... Ran another one last night after the wife went to bed, each one takes 2-3 hours but I don't have to sit there and watch it.

Acronis is cloning software, it also does backups (images) which is says to do first, just so many options under the settings that I'm confused on which is correct, but like I said, I decided to make multiple to help cover my rear, but I'm running out of large USB drives. I tried coping the images to my desktop hard drives to free up USB drives but when I checked the sizes of the copy and original they didn't match exactly. May be some compression or protected files not coping so I can't trust them.

booboo, that's my fear... HP won't give support once outside warranty, well unless your willing to pay for it. I've been doing a lot of searching on HP website but it's far from easy to find answers. Some of the help links are broken, some of the pdf help files are many years old and I don't trust those because things change so quickly.

HP says to create the restore disks (or to a USB drive) first but your only allowed one shot, why one time I don't understand, if it fails I'm screwed, well again they offer restore disks for $$$ :sneaky: HP recommends using Acronis but the free "limited" Acronis version says nothing about creating restore disks at all, they say first create a backup image file to a USB or second drive. Then under that there is a wide variety of choices from daily backup's of files you pick to a complete drive image including all partitions (that I know I want) but then there are yet other choices like making the image bootable (??) include moving the Acronis software to the image (??) but it doesn't tell you which is best or correct for this application. Once the backup image is made then they say to make the clone, again more choices on settings but not clear on which is best for this application or just what the end results will be. And because it's a free limited version there's no customer support, unless you take the pop-up offer to "buy full version now at a discount." :-x

I'm sure to IT folks all this would be a walk in the park, they'd know what all these options mean and would wiz right through it but if I screw it up the wife's joy of thinking her computer is going to be a lot faster will turn to anger if I tell her, Sorry but I screwed up your computer and you can't use it until I spend money to fix it..... Plus I'll be reminded of it every now and then until the day I die... Oh well, got a lot more research to do, thought it'd be a lot easier then this. If I can get a wrench on it I can fix it in my sleep, not so much with some of this tech stuff. :(
Now this is from the FULL version of Acronis, I am not sure if you version is handicapped vs the FULL or not.

In Acronis, you want to make what they call a complete "disk image", which includes all of the partitions on the disk. Store this image on the original SSD if there is enough space, the images are a lot smaller than the file size they represent due to compresion.

Then you want to make a "Universal Restore" disk. This can be either a USB drive or a CD if you have a CD writer. TEST - TEST - TEST the universal restore disk. It will be bootable and launch you into a bare bone copy of Acronis. Then you browse to the disk image and restore that image to a different disk.

Jeesh, Samsung just needed the drive plugged into a SATA port, boot off of it (or maybe the supplied CD, don't remember), select the source drive and that was it. Took about a half hour, including the final reboot, back into Windows. I didn't even have to re-register Windows if I remember correctly.

Happy New Year! :)

Stopped celebrating them years ago, probably because I always seem to fall asleep before midnight and miss the ball drop. I'll leaving the celebrating to the younger. Cheers :toast:

My wishes for 2018, more Love in the world, less us vs them, just be kinder to each other. :)
