but, lol, with my holding on to gadgets till they stop working instead of upgrading when there's no need, i might be left out in the cold once againThat's a nice WiFi scanner, Rossum, even has an IP scan of your local subnet. I fooled a little and can see different networks depending on which way, and how high, I hold the phone. Like I said Tibs, signal propagation is a pretty fickle phenomenon.
on second thought, the netsurveyor problem might have been me not switching users and downloading it with a non-administrator account. i'll try one more time later onbut, lol, with my holding on to gadgets till they stop working instead of upgrading when there's no need, i might be left out in the cold once againthe netsurveyor app is apparently not compatible with my windows10 lap top which originally had 7. and the tablet is below ios 6, im pretty sure, so rossum idea won't work.

not going online with the administrator account has served me well over the years - will let you know if i have better luck with net surveyor once i have a bit more time.it works fine. I installed it with my own account, admin privileges, so that could be why you're having a problem
Nice gear!
YES!But does it have that distinctive sound when it's turned on and moved around?
and mystery solvedthere was no need to retry installing net surveyor; the hidden network culprit was the original roku stick i moved from next door to the family room's tv. apparently, those things create their own wifi to make the remote work and my lap top picked it up. what's puzzling though that seems not to be the case when the roku is built into the tv
unless i never noticed because i only check available networks when one of my hot spots is acting up and i need to switch over.
