I am curious to get a few answers as to the dangers of a protected l-ion battery. If it somehow is shorted out can it explode or is this what the protection is for. I would like as much info on them as I can get.
I tried finding some info on lithium ion battery explosions after reading the above 2 links. It seems that most of the time it happens from overcharging. I found this video that shows one exploding, but pay attention to the amp meter; there was a lot of current being fed to the battery. I have four 14500 (900)MAH and two 18650 (3000) MAH trustfires and a 500 MAH LI ION Charger and the batteries never even got warm while they were charging; stayed ice cold. I also have a canon 580 EX2 Flash for my camera that takes four 1.2 volt 2900 MAH NIMH batteries and they get really hot when they charge. I was kinda scared when I saw all the negative comments on Li ion batteries but if used properly I do not think there is any or very little danger.
I do not doubt that; all I know is those 2900 mah NIMH 1.2 batteries for my flash come out of the charger hot enough they could be used as hand warmers in the winter.
