Any electronic product, if used improperly, can have negative consequences. But e-cigs are the only products getting attention because the media is off their rocker. And of course, the person this happened to will probably blame the e-cig industry rather than their own poor judgement, placing even more unneccesary negative press on the vaping community.

Now let's be fair to other unloved electronic devices. Look at the poor Galaxy Note. It got tossed of of airplanes that weren't even operated by United. IIRC, Tossed off Amtrak too. Then the hoverboards, banned from public spaces, and airplanes again, as they erupted in a Li fueled fury. And who can forget the odd iPhone going off in some teen's pocket. Never mind the fleet of Boeing 787's grounded for their Li battery issues.

Thing is, those devices aren't tainted with the word "cigarette", even with an "e" in front of it. Tobacco and cigarettes kill, and now they're coming after the public with exploding batteries. Given that the average person barely knows what a mod is, it's the herd mentality of fear of any new product that could possibly go pop, even when they have a dozen other things around with the same type batteries in them. Those are familiar, this is an unknown risk.

And a person has never had hot ash fly into their face from a cigarette while driving, and crashed. Nobody has ever dropped a cigarette on their lap while driving and ended up rolling over off the side of the road.

I thought that too - more than once I dropped a lit cigarette in my lap while driving.
