Alibaba.com has been mentioned here. Andrew Wong (AW) specifically told me that 'all' the AW batteries on alibaba are fake. That's one massive ebay type website with 100% fake AW batteries. What about the other batteries.

Buying genuine batteries is essential, but not always the easiest thing to do . Not to mention safe use.

As for me, I'd rather use flashlight or battery sellers rather than e-cigarette sellers for batteries. The e-cigarette market is new. It will take time to weed out the fake vendors. There are some genuine ones though.

berylanna: I'm on the same page as you.

I think practicing safety with regulated first. Then using a Mech with a kick or fuse. Only then, should one remove a fuse, (if they want to), after much time and much experience.

i've used regulated mods for the last 9 months. Only recently did I pick up my first mech. I didnt get a kick or a fuse. I dont entirely agree with you, but I agree with the principal of slow progression. I am confidant in my ability to build coils, but not overly confidant. I still build on an ohm meter, fire and pinch my coils on a regulated device, then, and only then do i put it on my mech. I keep my coils over .5 ohms. usually closer to .8.

I've genuinely enjoyed reading all 43 pages of this since returning home from said event. It's like the old test where you pass a story around a big circle of people and see how it has changed by the time it gets back to the first person. lol So much speculation, fingers being pointed, and accusations thrown around, all based on very little fact, and a whole lot of guesswork.

For the record... I had a great time, tried a lot of stuff, bought my first 2 authentic mech mods, and met some really nice people. I also hope they don't change the name or the logo, and i love my t shirts from this event and the one earlier this year.

Cloud chasers are easy to blame, and maybe deservedly. (even though he wasn't in the cloud comp, and we don't really know anything about his build.) Do a google search on "e-cigarette explodes", and see what the images are. Ego, after ego, after ego. But that's not really very exciting, and this story certainly was... At the end of the day, it's the community that has made this a story, and the community is to blame if somebody else gets a hold of all of this speculation reported as fact and spreads it as such.

I agree the story has probably gotten out of hand.
If someone sites this as "reliable information" I would change my new source.. lol
At the end of the day I think the moral of the story is BE SAFE. In addition to that, we need to do our part to make sure our community is informed on safety. In our vape meets, on forums like this, as well as our B&Ms. We need to make sure that reliable and accurate safety information is available and spread so this sort of things doesnt happen out of ignorance.
You cant fix stupid, and this is BOUND to happen again (especially after seeing the idiot youtube video exploding his battery with a .04 ohm build or whatever ridiculousness it was...).

You do not have to have a sub ohm build for a battery to melt down and blow. If a switch is engaged with no shut off on a 2.2 ohm build, the battery will meltdown and blow.

Is you Smash the Power Button Down and have a 2.2 ohm Build, you are going to ask your Battery to Discharge about 1.9 Amps. Given that the Voltage is at 4.2 Volts.

Most Batteries are going to have No Problem providing a 2 Amp Constant Discharge.

You will Probably Dry Burn your Coil and then Pop it Long Before your Battery even gets Warm.

GrimmGreen even commented. Good comment maybe the boy will listen.

Mean while, PBusardo emplys a slightly different tact:

Grimm, very well stated. However, I'm here to call him names. Dumb, irresponsible, foolish, thoughtless, moronic are just a few that come to mind while struggling to remain PG. We are becoming our own worst enemy.

    and

In your case, ohms law should be replaced by Darwinism. You're quite lucky you didn't record a snuff film. I would find it hard to believe that even the most extreme cloud chasers approve of what you're doing. At least you'll get plenty of views. Excellent work.

    Rather sharp, old boy.

Spitting 7 watts just shy of 2 amps on a declining 4v charge on a 2.2ohm coil under a constant discharge will eventually meltdown the battery like I said. Go ahead and try it for yourself. Hold the tube tightly in your hand and share how warm it gets...smh.

I can't think of ANY 18650 on the market that would blow from a constant 2 amps. Not even ICRs. I have high powered lamps that I run ICRs in which draw more than 2 amps, and have been run continuously more times than I can remember.

What you are suggesting means that every single battery manufacturer is flat out lying. Do you have ANY evidence to back this up?

Oddly enough, they had classes/talks about battery safety at the event. At the first Vape Blast in Dallas, they also had classes on safe rebuilding in drippers, gennies, and kayfun style tanks. But just like it happens countless times a day on this forum, there's always somebody out there who doesn't listen and/or is too ignorant or stupid to heed the advice they are given.

I'm certainly not saying exploding mod guy did nothing wrong. He probably did something VERY, VERY wrong. In fact, he could be the SAME guy as in that youtube video! Maybe that Congestus finally melted down and he picked up a Mutant clone! It's certainly in the realm of possibility! ( Just trying to see if we can change the narrative to "Idiot from youtube video show's up at USA vape convention with pipe bomb." Step 2 will be changing the mod to a copper Manhattan clone. ;) )

No! The community is NOT to blame for this being a story. This is a story because it's the first time the community has heard & seen some evidence of the possible dangers with using mechanicals as well as the dangers of using these batteries.

What type of build he used is obviously speculation. Perhaps the details of how/what was modded on the user's device is also speculation. But what is not speculation is the fact that the battery vented & caused damage at a public meet & the fact that it could have seriously injured someone.

The vaping community SHOULD be talking about this because we do NOT want this to become a regular occurrence. We do not want to hear about this happening at other vaping events nor do we want to hear about this happening in someone's home, car, etc. We do NOT want to see anyone get hurt. Period.

No one's here bashing your vaping practices in this thread so perhaps you could refrain from pointing your fingers at the vaping community just to make yourself feel better about something that no one's criticizing YOU for.

Forgot and left a flashlight on overnight this past weekend. End result ..... one totally depleted 18650.
(and no, that battery would not be safe to recharge)
If it had been in my hand as you suggest, maybe I would have remembered to shut it off
There really is a reason why a battery has a SAFE discharge rating! The battery I ruined by over discharging it had a 20a continues rating.

So .......... I'm really sorry that your 2a rated 14500 trustfire battery got hot! At a 1a discharge it would not have.

If that's what you think, you haven't been paying attention. There have been at least three other exploding Ecig stories I can think of in the last week or so, one involving a fatality. Those had verifiable facts. Those were in the news, on the tv, etc. in this case, we have turned pure speculation into facts, and that is detrimental to everyone involved. Read back through the thread and tell me I'm wrong.

We should be talking about this. We should be talking about safety, etc. we should not be creating a story to fit our personal vaping agendas.

    This!

And I would add: we would be pretty irresponsible as a community if we censored ourselves just so a story like this does not get out.

Can you post the links to the other stories? Especially the fatality.
