Ah! I understand(i think) it's mainly the flavourings that cause the trouble. And possibly if the nic is PG based. Yes/No?
The flavours that seem to make you wheezy, seem to coincide with the tank cracking flavours. How do you get on with 100% Vg liquids? If you avoid the certain "wheezy" flavours.
Fine. My biggest problem has always been PG - apart from a particular vanilla, the problem with certain flavours emerged later. Not sure if I've always been allergic to those flavours or if it's a secondary sensitivity caused by the initial PG one.
Once a sensitivity to one thing establishes itself, it often results in sensitivities to other things developing.
I gave up smoking last January using the V2 & GreenSmoke cig size batteries & cartridges ...and I had no intention of stopping smoking at the time either!
I first got a bit wheezy with the V2 vanilla cartridges so stopped using them and then, 6 weeks in, realised I was sensitive to PG: eczema on my face, sore & bleeding gums and throat, upset tum, headaches, swollen red eyes and permanent wheezing, which later became a far worse seizing up of my respiratory system, pretty similar to an asthma attack. I can't take in enough air and the top half of my lungs feel like concrete ..it's truly awful and quite alarming.
Once I realised what was causing the problems, I had to change everything so that I could use VG liquids (the only VG cartridges we have in the UK aren't brilliant) - and that's when I met this lovely bunch of FT 'enablers'
Thankfully, I found Chefs fairly early in my quest for VG liquids - I'd found some OK ones and some absolutely
dreadful ones elsewhere!
I've also noticed that some brands VG liquids are better than others (as have other people that can't use much PG). Chefs give me the least problems of any, and they've been absolutely brilliant help once the sensitivity to certain flavours emerged.
The widespread problems with vanilla/custard flavours became better documented since spring and manufacturers such as TPA and Capella have done a lot in just the past few months to eliminate the diketones in them which are known irritants. (Don't know what Chefs use, but theirs are one of the few custard type brands that I've never had a problem with).
Some fruit and other flavours had also emerged as producing bad reactions:

I found that thread after having a bad reaction to lime and also a blackberry one. Cinnamon is another that emerged as troubling to me along with other fruits such as apple.
I've always had a bit of a wheeze with others such as caramel and coffee, but not enough to
badly affect breathing, so I use them carefully ..same with strawberry.
I do have a few bottles of 100% VG ones that I can fall back on if I get days of particularly bad wheeziness, but I can't say there's any I'd be happy to have to use permanently because not many companies produce a top class liquid for innovation and flavours.
One thing that probably helps with the percentage of PG in Chefs is that their nicotine is actually in VG. Every bit counts towards the difference between it being too much or low enough to cope with.
I've never been allergic to anything in my life before, but if I'd known in the beginning that I'd develop these sensitivities and allergies I may never have attempted to use e-cigs. It's a bit of a constant battle to avoid reactions, and every now and then I get a period of some days where I need to use Ventolin and/or Theophylline based tablets to prevent what I assume to be the PG sensitivity building up to a level that it closes down my airways.
It's been such a darn miracle that I could actually stop smoking after so many decades, I've been determined to get around the problems I've encountered. So far, I'm scraping through, but it hasn't been without a lot of help and co-operation from suppliers such as Chefs.
I'm not sure I could stop altogether - in fact I do know it would be rather difficult certainly at the moment - but if I went on to develop more than a slight congestion problem with VG, I've at least cut back my nicotine strength to around .4mg. ...it's messed with my brain concentration levels, but at least I'm not smoking!
