When I first started rebuilding my ProTank 2 coils about 10 or 11 years ago, I used 32g Kanthal wire. The following year I switched to using Kayfuns and 30g wire. I kept using 30g until sometime last year when I was running low on 30g wire and decided to try some 28g that I had. I liked it, so I've been using the 28g ever since.

Can you tell a difference from 26 to 28? I assume there is a difference but wondering if it’s worth buying a spool of wire for.
I bought a spool of each and was immediately drawn to 28ga for my kayfuns. The 26ga seemed to take a second longer to get to temperature.

When trying to mimic the hit of an analog, that extra second made a real difference.

I used 30 for Pro tanks, then moved to KFL's. 30 didn't do the job in KFLs, I think because the coils were too fragile and I wanted a bit more power. Did try 26 briefly but that didn't work either, can't even remember why. That's 6 wraps at 2.5 which comes out around 1.10 ohms. Vape it in power mode at 12W. Perfect MTL vape for me. Never did experiment much.

I kept a diary for years after I started vaping. I just read through the entries for the time when I started making coils 28g coils for the KFL. By chance the first coil was perfect. After that it took around 20 coils before I could consistently make good ones. Do it in my sleep now.
