EDIT: I had a difficult time writing my comments, because I feel so negative toward FDA and government interference. Even so, I decided 'something' would be better than 'nothing', and the following was my best attempt to write a civil comment.
"I began smoking cigarettes at age 27. It didn't take more than 3 weeks for me to realize I was 'less depressed' than before I started. Self medication? Maybe...but it was not my intention to be a smoker for 32+ years. Problem is, there is far more in cigarettes than nicotine. Since I became a 100% vaper (electronic cigarete), I am no longer addicted to all those chemicals in addition to nicotine. What's more, I no longer have uncontrollable cravings for nicotine. Just as I can go for days without drinking coffee (caffeine), I can go for days without vaping nicotine...but my days are HAPPIER and more SETTLED with caffeine and nicotine. I am especially fond of feeling I am in control of my intake of whatever substance or food I may ingest. With smoking of cigarettes, I had no such control.
Years ago, during one of my efforts to quit smoking, I grew extremely depressed. My doctor said, "If you can quit smoking, we'll put you on Xanax for awhile...and maybe a more permanent drug to help with depression."
I can't think of a good reason to quit smoking, only to adopt "permanent" prescription meds! I don't know how the FDA feels about it, but I suspect Big Pharma would think "permanent" prescriptions are a GREAT idea; not me.
As a vaper since 2009, I recently took my nic level to ZERO...but the depression from earlier years returned. So, I raised my nic level back to about 6mg, and the clouds of depression lifted.
I vape nic, because it lifts my spirits. If this is 'self medication', I'm all for it. (I also use band aids on cuts, 'self administer' cold medicine when needed, and drink coffee every...EVERY morning, to get my day going.)
I've done extremely well breaking my addiction to cigarettes, without 'help' from the FDA. My greatest fear is that 'nanny FDA' will interfere with the effectiveness of e-cigarettes toward promoting healthy living among addicted smokers. My request is to limit your involvement, unless it's to promote the practice for the benefit of all."
