Well that was quite a dog and pony show, well certainly a lot of dogs anyway. I would suppose these new efforts will rank right up there with the war on drugs.

If education doesn't stop our children from smoking, I'm sure banning flavors will certainly do the trick. Do these people really have a clue or is it another beaurocracy gearing up to proclaim their self importance.

The FDA barely has the resources to carry out what it does now.So, how do they think they are going to have the resources to do any of this crap? They will catch maybe what a dozen retailers selling to minors a year?Big deal. It's just going to be yet another waste of tax dollars on a witch hunt for retailers selling to minors just so they can say "hey we are doing something for your health".

This new regulation was first approved and implemented by the FDA back in 1996 (I urged the FDA to do so back then), but was struck down by the US Supreme Court in 2000 when it ruled that the FDA wasn't authorized by Congress to regulate tobacco.

Nearly all of the provisions in this new FDA rule have already been implemented by local and state laws and/or by the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between State AGs and tobacco companies.

So there's really nothing new here, just a press conference in which current FDA officials grandstanding about what was largely achieved a decade ago.

Wow...To think that is where our tax dollars are going is disheartening, to say the least....

The FDA tobacco law that was enacted by Congress in June, 2009 required the FDA to reissue these 1996 regulations, so its not the FDA's fault (although they could have explained those facts instead of congratulating themselves for protecting youth from tobacco marketing).

Same thing occurred (i.e. the law required the FDA to do so) for the FDA's rule banning certain cigarette flavorings (back in September), and next week's FDA Tobacco Scientific Advisory Committee meeting to consider a ban on menthol cigarettes, and this week's call for public comment on dissolvable smokelesss tobacco products.
