tobacco company executives even noted that e-cigarettes drove total industry cigarette volumes down about 600 million cigarettes, or about 1 percent, during the first quarter, excluding Internet sales — a major avenue for e-cig purchases.

^^^ I do like these numbers.
Let see - 600,000,000 cigarettes in the first quarter equal to about 333,333 former smokers (assuming 1 pack a day per) are using e-cigs.

While a hypothetical pack-a-day smoker who switches to a smokeless product is going to reduce their risk, “it all comes down to how the products ultimately are used,” Zeller said.

On one hand the FDA admits switching to e-cigarettes reduces risk...
However... "it all comes down to how they are used"

They're going to regulate something they FINALLY admit
will save Millions of lives ... but they are unsure how e-cigs are used ??!!
:?:

KNOCK-KNOCK
E-cigarettes are a smoking ALTERNATIVE ...
You guys at the FDA will not permit our marketers to tell the truth
that MILLIONS have used e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation.
You're lame rule ... Not ours !!

E-cigs are gaining momentum every day. Going to be harder and harder to crash our party. Still no word from the White House either...wonder why?? Hmm??
The last petition, which only needed 5,000 signatures, closed on October 17, 2011 and replies started coming on December 15th, 2011.
So last time it took 7 weeks to start getting replies.

This time the petition closed on February 13th after getting nearly 30,000 signatures.
And still no response after more than 13 weeks.

Could the FDA be a little bit scared of us?
Yes, they might very well be.

The attacks on vaping all started with this administration. And we know how they are loath to admit they are ever wrong. Maybe the powers to be will just "recuse" themselves and state: "we know nothing". It seems to be working with the easedropping on AP reporters and the Bengazi attacks.

We have no issues pointing out how the FDA (a Federal Agency)
has lied and is over-reaching using its power in attempt to
stamp out our movement.

It's often difficult to separate the FDA's oppressive and targeting agendas
regarding e-cigs from everything else going on in our government today.

Few here on the ECF ... would argue the FDA is not sleeping with Big Pharma
and giving them a free pass by stamping FDA Approved on many of their poisons.

The bottom line is OUR government AND its agencies are corrupt.
None of their hands are clean.

On Topic
Bill Godshall is correct when he said the FDA is dragging its feet
in regulating ... because the FDA really doesn't know what to do
with e-cigarettes.

I suggest the FDA wishes it never even heard about e-cigarettes.
The FDA knows IF they attempt to come down hard with a heavy hand
on this industry ... It's going to blow-up in their face.

I'm sure you have. And it's unfortunate that some ECF members (and some people in general) are so partisan in their politics that they would rather "cut off their nose to spite their face", than admit that there are some very negative aspects to this administration. Even though I strongly disagree with this administration on many issues, I have given them high marks when they do something right, like killing bin Laden. But that does not negate the fact that they are very Machiavellian in how they operate, which has been clearly witnessed on this issue and the more publicized issues currently in the media.

"Changes in the marketplace have forced the public health community to wrestle with the idea that some tobacco products may pose less of a health risk than others." Well, it's nice to see main stream media admitting that decisions pertaining to our health are market driven!

"Public health officials say the safety of e-cigarettes and their effectiveness in helping people quit regular smokes haven’t been fully studied." Why yes, maybe it is about time you studied them instead of just publishing your conclusions. I would have thought the study should come first. Is this an admission that they've made up all the negative information we've seen for the last 4 years?

It really does look as if the FDA and ANTZ thought that a little misinformation would turn the public off to ecigs and they would just go away. Let's hope their next strategy is a little more logical or just as futile.

Considering that the previous administration left office before there was a sizable number of vapers (the first e-cigarettes were exported in 2005-2006), that argument is rather spurious. It was a non-issue at that point. Besides, neither republicans nor democrats have shown a reluctance to control what you may do with your private life or your body. They just differ on which activities to .... in on.

Well put. The problem lies in the fact that gov't works for corporations now and not people. As faulty as this administration is, voter's weren't given much of a choice. It's highly unlikely that a corporate tool would have turned the situation around. When the opposing party gets control they usually turn issues of the day into spying in the bedroom. Their policies haven't changed in 30 years even though they nearly brought financial collapse for everyone but themselves. Even now, they see that insulting nearly every demographic as more of a 'marketing issue' than one requiring fundamental policy changes.

There was no choice.
