Hi, just thought after my first post re how to pack my ecigs for the airport and my worries about security questions that I'd post about what happened so others can have a smooth check in. I was travelling to Malta where vaping us common-ish. I flew from Bournemouth airport and packed all my batteries and cartridges in the original boxes so they'd all look organised etc i was told by Ryanair over the phone to pack it all in my hand luggage. When I got to the checking area they called me over and asked me what was in my bag..I guessed the ecigs were the problem so I got them out and showed the security guy. He took them away and then brought them back and told me they had similar insides to a detonator :s

he knew what they were but warned me that they're 'believe it or not' not very common in the uk which surprised me.He told me they were fine but explained that they'd probably always flag up under the x ray machine. He advised that if you're travelling with them to tell the security guys as soon as you present your bag or you'll always get taken aside and to never pack them in your hold baggage.

On his advice I told security at Malta airport on the way home that I had e cigs in my hand luggage, they said 'fine' but then called me into a seperate area again to ask me what was in my bag....so, basically, a bit embarrassing for me and I annoyed my husband! but it was fine when I'd told them what they were (even though they knew :s )

The experience wa a little odd and could become pretty tedious but I got to keep them and I had the impression that as they became more common it'd be easier.my advice if anyone wants any us to
a) tell them you have e cigs
b) put them in your hand luggage
c) don't try to make them look like something else
d)ask them if hey have any advice for you re the airport you'll be flying back from.

Ryanair offer smokeless cigs on board at 6euros,did'nt try them...but won't let you vape on
board for some non reason.. X

Good post Termite :)

Lol though at the security guy saying they aren't that common in the UK :) I started vaping just over 4 years ago & back then, hardly anyone in the UK had heard of e-cigs. Things have changed so much & more & more smokers in the Uk are now using e-cigs as an alternative to smoking. Plus most folks these days know about them :)

Romkush, chrissie's right, they're 'smokeless' cigs, he said they have nic in them but were just to suck on?! A pack was 6 euros.i'd give them a go on a long haul flight but Malta was only 3 hours...thinking about it now I should have bought some as I want to visit my brother in Canada next year and that's a 9 hour plus flight and not sure I could manage that! I guess Chrissie, they maybe don't get many people travelling with them, mind you, Bournemouth us a tiny airport and we were the only flight leaving over a 2 hour period.

I hate feeling like an oddball at times lie that, you'd think someone's tell airport security there are e cigs about that look like detonators but aren't and tell them to ask you if you have them to put them in the plastic tray so they can have a good look without hauling you aside and making you feel like a terrorist. standing to one side with the security guy saying the word detonator to me got me a few black looks...on the plus side, we may get to sit alone on the plane:) I only started 3 months ago but am still surprised how many people around here (somerset)haven't seen them before as my friend says they're practically compulsory in Cardiff ;)
