Hello Everyone,

I'm really frustrated...

Six years ago, after smoking for 3 decades, I tried vaping. It seemed like a miracle and I stopped smoking for over 1 year. Suddenly, I began feeling fatigued, restless and generally horrible - HORRIBLE! I went to the doctor and they found nothing. Blood tests, ekg, urine tests, etc… and nothing. I couldn’t figure it out. So after finding in very small print on a vaping site, that some people are allergic to one of the ingredients in it, I stopped. Problem solved so it seemed. A month later, I tried again, and VOILA SICK AGAIN! Needless to say, I was heartbroken! But still not convinced.

Fast forward to three years ago. I had to stop smoking and thought I’d try vaping again (given technology and all). It was fine for 3 years! THREE YEARS AND NO PROBLEM and then suddenly, back to that same horrible feeling. I am unable to locate any info that backs my symptoms so I thought I’d ask here…

Clearly, I am one of a very small group and fear I may have to stop vaping which will ultimately land me smoking again. Any thoughts? Thank you.

As a test, I have stopped Vaping to see where it goes... Been using the same E Liquid for some time... goodlife vapor, 40/60 mixture and another which is 50/50.

Oh btw, I am certainly no hypochondriac as I have drank and drugged for years with no real issues… (clean 20 years, jus sayin’). I am the first to say, BS!

Any thoughts?

So you think you might be allergic to one of the ingredients? Which ingredient might that be?

Some people have a hypersensitivity or allergy to Pg (propylene glycol). If that is the case with you, you could find an e-liquid which is 100% Vg.

If it might be a hypersensitivity or allegy to flavoring agents, you could try flavorless e-liquid.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

Hi and welcome to ECF! Nice to have you on board and we will try and help you!

Your saying you feel "ill" but ill in what way?

Nausea is caused by too much nicotine - as a general rule.

Shortness of breath is often caused by a mild allergy to either the PG, the VG, or one of the flavorings.

What are your exact symptoms?

What did you try in order to alleviate those symptoms?

Have you tried unflavored PG? Unflavored VG?

Have you lowered your nicotine content?

What device are you using? What coil material? How many ohms and watts?

Perhaps DIY is what is needed to find the root of your problem. This puts you in control as to the levels of VG, nicotine and even the flavours you wish to use. I seem to have an intolerance to some of the creams and custards flavourings that are used in many ejuices. To me they taste like I am vaping a pepper shaker. Not nice! With commercial juices I just wrote it off as a bad mix, or a poor recipe. It wasn’t until I started DIY did I discover it was specific to certain brands and flavours. Not quite the same as your situation but does demonstrate how one can single out the root of a problem when they are in control over what is being used.

You have a bit of a challenge ahead of you….good luck!

Edit: Speel check!!

do the drip test.... instead of vaping, place a small drop of juice on a finger and lick it up... it will supply the nic you need and tastes even better than vaping... see if you still feel terrible, ,if you do then its most likely your juice has changed...

as for a 100% VG juice see Heathers Heavenly Vapes... been using them since 2013 exclusively ( well other than my DIYNETs )

Hello and welcome to ECF. I'm not sure where you live so I am going to take a shot in the dark. It was recommended that you vape a batch of 100% VG then a batch of PG to rule out a VG or PG sensitivity. I would recommend if you go for isolating the VG or PG that you replace the wick and clean out your tank before trying the other e-juice. If you live in the US I have found 100% VG at CVS or Walgreens. PG was a bit tougher, but I found some at Tractor Supply. These are readily local and are places if you don't want to wait for an order to arrive via snail mail or big brown truck. Good luck in finding what is causing your symptoms and I hope you don't have to return to smoking.

Damn that is unfortunate. I wish I had something helpful to add to what the others have suggested. I think you should first rule out either PG or VG allergies and go from there. If it can't be solved you could try snus to keep you from smoking. I know it's not the same. I hope you find a solution.

Good luck!

If I understand you correctly, you vaped for one year before you became ill the first time, became ill immediately the second time, and vaped for three years before becoming ill the third time. I'm not a doctor, but but if that's correct I'm almost certain your symptoms have nothing to do with vaping. If you vaped for four years without issues, it's not at all likely that vaping suddenly began to cause systemic problems. It sounds like you may have something intermittent going on that just happened to coincide with the stop and start of vaping the second time.

It's true that some people are sensitive to PG, VG and other flavourings - I'm one of them, as it happens. However, I've only heard of them causing local problems, such as a sore throat with PG sensitivity or lung congestion with VG sensitivity. That doesn't mean it's impossible for you to have an unusual reaction, but it doesn't really sound like it in my inexpert opinion.

I'd recommend you return to the doctor, and I wish you the best of luck in figuring out what's going on.

Welcome and glad you joined.
As suggested, might want to purchase (most B&M Vape shops should have both) a small bottles of PG, and VG and vape unflavored each for a day. If no results, add PG based nic to the unflavored PG. Then VG based nic to the unflavored VG, while vaping for a day. The experiment may give you some insights. Please let us know if this narrows down your problem allergy.
