New to the forums, and a big fan of my Reo Grand.

Looking into modifying it to be low profile, don't have a dremel so thinking about just using a file. Anyone have any experience with doing the modification with a file? How hard is it to get through the anodized layer?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't made one LP, but it seems like a dremel would be difficult... It would probably go fine, but difficult to make it flat and even, a belt sander will make it all even :)

I used a bench grinder with the fine stone to get mine initially topped off and finished it with a flat hand file to flatten and smooth it out. Make sure to put some masking tape over the 510 to keep metal shavings out of it. Had it done in less than 45 minutes. Needless to say, the metal will heat up on the bench grinder so go a bit and let it cool off some between grinding. You can do this.

Thanks for the info everyone. I would like to pick up another power tool, but that's not in the cards currently. A quick search shows a couple of tool rental places near me, so I'll check for belt sanders there. If that doesn't pan out, it sounds like filing it would be possible...but slow.

Is there any reason, other than looks, that I would need to anodize or put some other finish on the top after the modification?

Not that i know of. Rob already sells the tra. And thats just bare aluminum. From what ive seen and read, aluminum is basically impervious to air and water.

No reason other than cosmetic. Just find the stainless atty of your dreams and it will look like it should be that way on purpose.

And the slow thing: Slow is good. This is one of those things where you can't un-ring the bell if you make a mistake like rounding off a corner, or ding the fire button, or... Stable equipment and a steady hand.

Many have used a file. Even more have sent it to Rob to get it done. A 4" angle grinder with a sanding disc followed by a file to finish it off flat would work too. Just be very careful not to slip. Taping it up with masking tape will help protect from slips with the file, but probably not with the sander.

Alright, don't think I'll mess with finishing it then. I'll give it a shot and maybe post a pic here when it's done (if I don't mess it up too badly :) )

Actually hoping I can get a stainless nuppin, should end up looking pretty good. Speaking of the nuppin, I missed the survey, should I post in the library thread that I'm interested? Or just try to order one when they're ready? Not sure about the rules around posting in that thread.

I'm going to go a different direction with this, tax return turned out better than I thought it would...so placing an order for a new LP/SL Reo Grand :)

I'm a bit attached to my current one (I've had it with me practically every minute for the last two years) and don't want to mess it up with the modification. Figure it doesn't hurt to have two in case something happens, not that mine has ever let me down but that's my excuse haha.

Now I just have to decide between black wrinkle or kawasaki green, love the green color but it might be a little too flashy for me.
