Some people suggest a quick burn on the wires with a small torch to get off the manufacturing garbage. Which leads my tool clueless self to ask. Where the heck does one find a really small torch?

A cigar shop, A lighter will work too. It's just a high powered lighter, not a torch like for welding or something

Note to self: get a multimeter or a vamo before building the heads.

Multi-Meter How to for Electronic Cigarette users - YouTube pretty good vid for a new multimeter user The one i use LCD Digital Multitester Multimeter AC DC Ohm Volt Meter New | eBay W the non professional ones you touch leads till it settles on reading IE: mine .6 so if my atty read 3.0 real reading 2.4 ohm just subtract, w a dead short you will only receive the original reading .6 or slightly higher. And that usually means the center positive post wire is touching a side or wires crossed or some such The red speaker setting also give a nice beep for dead short.LOL. The setting to use is lowest ohm measure mine above is The 200 @ bottom.

You can get a micro torch from Home Depot or Lowes. Or you can go to Walmart or Bed Bath and Beyond and get Creme Brulee torch. They fill with Butane and are easy to use.

The wire is cheap on eBay. The more you buy the cheaper it is.

I bought a 100 foot roll of Kanthal A1 32 gauge for $6.00 and free shipping.

Silica wick seems to be a bit more expensive. Just do a search on eBay for whatever diameter you want, probably 2mm or 3mm.

Cotton thread or cheesecloth, on the other hand, is very cheap.

I picked up my 3 yards x 3 yards cheesecloth from the grocery store for $3 or $4, I can't remember which.

With the cheesecloth you can get enough wick to go with the 100 feet of wire.

Well, the cheesecloth is cotton, so it comes down to cotton vs. silica.

Some have concerns about the possibility of particles of the silica coming off the wick and being inhaled. Seems to me if any did come off, they'd sink to the bottom of the tank, but that's just my thought, no "study" of it that I know of.

Cotton, of course, is cheap and readily available.

Silica lasts longer.

Soooooo..... :2c:

That's a reasonable price, but I didn't see anything about shipping.

I got my roll off eBay for $6.00 and free shipping. Took 3 days for it to arrive.

Shipping was cheap. I ordered 2 rolls of 100ft. 30awg and 32awg. They charged me $1.90 for shipping.

Okay. But what if I didn't want to order them? Where can I get the wire and or silica wicks locally? I live in Vegas so we have pretty much everything. The silica I'm not to worried about, as I can use cotton.

Might be hard to find locally. It's normally used in industrial purposes. Best guess of a place to try would be a place that repairs appliances. Maytag repair man, etc.
